With Stranger Things still popular on Netflix, the creators, the Duffer Brothers, are introducing their next big project. Netflix has just released a trailer for The Boroughs, a sci-fi mystery series they’re executive producing. Many are describing it as a more mature version of Stranger Things.

The trailer for The Boroughs hints at a monster-filled mystery unfolding in a retirement community. It’s a bit like a flipped version of Stranger Things. While Stranger Things explored fears about growing up and being young through a sci-fi/horror lens, The Boroughs seems to be doing the same, but focusing on the concerns people have later in life.

What Is The Boroughs About?

The Boroughs, a beautiful retirement community in the New Mexico desert, promises its residents a perfect life. But for new resident Sam Cooper, it feels more like a trap. When a frightening encounter one night reveals a monster is lurking within the community, Sam’s warnings are ignored. He finds help from an unexpected group of neighbors: a clever ex-reporter, someone searching for meaning, a jaded music manager, and a talented doctor desperate for answers. These overlooked individuals must work together to uncover the dark secret hidden within The Boroughs before it’s too late.

Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews are the creative forces behind the series. Addiss explained to Tudum that the show brings together their shared passions: his love of monsters and Matthews’ lifelong fascination with all things vintage. Matthews jokingly added that he’d happily live in the show’s setting, The Boroughs, if it weren’t for the monsters!
