Netflix Says Goodbye to a 30-Year-Old Masterpiece Spy Series

Netflix viewers will soon no longer be able to watch one of the most popular spy movie series ever made. The series is leaving Netflix next month.

Starting May 1st, Netflix will no longer have five of the Mission: Impossible movies available to stream. This includes the second, third, Ghost Protocol, and Rogue Nation films. These movies are currently available on Paramount+, and will likely stay there as Paramount Pictures produces the franchise.

Netflix Loses Mission: Impossible Film Franchise to Paramount+

Losing the Mission: Impossible films will be a significant loss for the streaming service, as they are a major draw for fans of action and thriller movies. Starring Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, the series is one of the most successful film franchises ever made, generating over $4.35 billion in box office revenue worldwide.

The first Mission: Impossible movie came out in 1996, originally based on the 1966 TV show. However, the film quickly became much more popular than the series and started a hugely successful movie franchise. In each film, Tom Cruise’s character undertakes dangerous missions to defeat enemies and avert worldwide catastrophes.

Tom Cruise has acted alongside a fantastic group of actors throughout the eight Mission: Impossible movies, including Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg. He’s also been a producer on every film, even though different directors and writers have worked on the series over time.

Despite changes behind the scenes, the Mission: Impossible series remains one of the best action franchises ever made. Critics consistently highlight the incredible stunts, often performed by Tom Cruise himself, and praise the fact that each new film improves upon the last – a rare achievement for action series.

Mission: Impossible Remains One of the Greatest Spy Series of All Time

The Mission: Impossible series continues to be a hit, and actually improved over time, as demonstrated by its success last year. The latest film earned over $598 million globally, including a record-breaking $79 million opening weekend. Critics loved it too, giving it an 80% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes – making it the seventh film in the series to receive positive reviews. Only Mission: Impossible II has received negative reviews, with a 58% rating.

Due to recent licensing changes, most of the Mission: Impossible movies are leaving Netflix. However, Netflix never had the newer films anyway. You can find all the recent Mission: Impossible installments, including the upcoming The Final Reckoning (releasing in 2025), on Paramount+.

The Mission: Impossible films depart Netflix on May 1.
