Netflix Says Goodbye to a Cult Favorite Nic Cage Action Movie Face/Off As Fans Await Sequel

The popular action movie Face/Off, starring John Travolta, will soon be removed from Netflix. Fans only have a few hours left to watch it on the streaming service.

The action movie Face/Off will be removed from Netflix on January 19th. It’s been available on the streaming service for quite a while, originally added on April 1, 2018, and has been re-added several times as its licensing agreement expired. Now, it’s leaving again.

John Woo directed the film, written by Mike Werb and Michael Colleary. The story centers on Archer, whose son is killed by the mercenary terrorist Castor Troy, played by Nicolas Cage. This sets Archer on a years-long path of revenge, but it tragically culminates in a surgery that gives him Troy’s face.

The villain quickly infiltrated every part of Archer’s life, and the actual FBI agent had to fix things while disguised as the world’s most wanted criminal.

In addition to John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, the film Face/Off features Joan Allen as Sean Archer’s wife, Eve, Dominique Swain as their daughter Jamie, Nick Cassavetes as Troy’s main drug dealer Dietrich, and Alessandro Nivola as Pollux Troy.

When Face/Off came out, it was a huge hit, earning over $245 million at the box office despite costing $80 million to make. Both critics and general audiences really enjoyed the movie.

Currently, Face/Off is highly rated on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 93% “Certified Fresh” score based on 97 critic reviews. Viewers also overwhelmingly approve of the film, giving it an 82% rating based on over 250,000 user reviews.

What the Future Looks Like for the Long-Awaited Face/Off Sequel

A sequel to the movie Face/Off has been highly anticipated by fans for years, with development officially starting in 2019. By 2021, Adam Wingard was confirmed as the director for Paramount Pictures. Barrett shared that it took him and Wingard two years to get the pitch approved, because the concept was so complex – the studio struggled to understand which actor was wearing whose face in each scene.

The development of Face/Off 2 has hit some significant roadblocks, including the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes. Currently, the project is on hold, but the writer is still working on the script. Once a draft is completed, Simon Barrett and I will review and revise it.

Although specifics about the plot of Face/Off 2 are still secret, Nicolas Cage has hinted at a more complicated story. In a 2023 interview, he suggested the film could involve the children of his and John Travolta’s characters, creating a scenario with multiple layers and even more dynamic interactions between the actors. He described it as a complex game with four players instead of just two.

Despite the delays, there’s still reason for fans to be optimistic. Nicolas Cage is also planning to revisit his role as Yuri Orlov from the 2005 film Lord of War, and this suggests the project could eventually come to fruition.

Face/Off is available for streaming on Netflix until Jan. 19.
