Many streaming services are competing to create the next big fantasy hit, but one Netflix show stands out for its rich and detailed backstory. While Stranger Things has grown into a large franchise – even becoming the most expensive TV season ever with its fifth season in 2025 – its scope still seems relatively small compared to the newer, more ambitious fantasy series from other streaming platforms.
I’ve been so impressed watching how much HBO has built with Game of Thrones – especially with the spin-offs like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. It’s become one of the most massive TV adaptations ever! Prime Video’s Critical Role shows, The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein, which are based on the Dungeons & Dragons podcast, feel like they’re trying to capture that same epic, realistic feel, but I have a feeling HBO’s new Harry Potter series is going to be even bigger than both of those franchises combined.
While Prime Video’s The Rings of Power successfully brings J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings world to television, Netflix’s One Piece still boasts a richer and more detailed backstory. The 2023 live-action adaptation of One Piece – a famously complex story – has been well-received, but after just two seasons, it’s only begun to explore the vastness of its universe.
One Piece’s Endless Lore Will Grow Even Bigger In Later Seasons
Eiichiro Oda created One Piece, which is now one of the most beloved manga and anime series ever made. It’s a truly original mix of humor, fantasy, scary moments, and exciting adventures, all centered around the pirate Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates. While the premise sounds straightforward, One Piece boasts an incredibly large and diverse cast of characters – making the worlds of even epic series like Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones feel relatively small in comparison.
One Piece holds the Guinness World Record for being the best-selling comic book series by a single author, highlighting just how extensive it is. The franchise includes 14 animated movies, an OVA, and currently spans 114 volumes, with no end in sight. Fans and critics consistently praise the series for its incredibly detailed and expansive world.
Future seasons of One Piece promise to make the story even more intricate, introducing elements like time travel with characters such as Toki and the introduction of actual gods like Nika, which opens up endless possibilities. While season 2 of One Piece received similar praise to the first, the show’s vastness means keeping the complex storyline organized will be a major challenge as it goes on.
Netflix’s One Piece Is Actually Deepening Oda’s Lore
Luckily, the Netflix version of One Piece is proactively addressing the challenges of adapting such a large story. By introducing characters like Sabo and Bartolomeo earlier on, the show is quickly building a more expansive world, so important plot points won’t feel out of nowhere. Unlike some other epic fantasy series, like Game of Thrones, it doesn’t jump around between too many disconnected characters.
Given how massive and complex One Piece has become, the Netflix adaptation needed a clever way to handle its sprawling story. Fortunately, the show tackled this challenge early on by subtly introducing elements from later arcs, which prevents viewers who haven’t read the manga from being completely surprised when those storylines appear later in the series.
