Tom Cruise is flying high once again.
Tom Cruise is now famous for his incredible stunts in the Mission: Impossible films, but he’s been a successful actor for decades. His movies have earned over $13 billion worldwide and have brought him four Academy Award nominations. Throughout his career, he’s collaborated with many renowned directors, including Steven Spielberg (War of the Worlds, Minority Report), Stanley Kubrick (Eyes Wide Shut), Rob Reiner (A Few Good Men), Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia), Barry Levinson (Rain Man), Oliver Stone (Born on the Fourth of July), Tony Scott (Top Gun, Days of Thunder), and Ridley Scott (Legend).
One of Tom Cruise’s most successful films is 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick. This long-awaited sequel, which is now popular on streaming services, came over thirty years after the original 1986 movie. Cruise returned as the daring pilot, and the film earned nearly $1.5 billion worldwide on a budget of $177 million. It’s now the 15th highest-grossing movie ever globally and the 5th highest in North America. Many believe this blockbuster, released during the early 2020s, played a significant role in helping movie theaters recover after widespread closures due to COVID-19.
As a movie fan, I’m not surprised to see Top Gun: Maverick still soaring! According to the folks at FlixPatrol, who really know their stuff about streaming numbers, the movie just hit No. 1 on Pluto TV in the US. And get this – it happened less than a week after it became available on the platform, starting May 1st. It’s amazing to see it doing so well even four years after it first came out in theaters.
Besides Dead Presidents (which came in at No. 10), no other new movies on Pluto TV made it into the top 10 this May. The chart continues to be dominated by established favorites like The Godfather (No. 3), Grease (No. 4), The Godfather: Part II (No. 6), First Blood (No. 7), Gladiator (No. 8), and Clueless (No. 9). Interestingly, Clueless has only been in the top 10 for 27 days, while all the other films have remained popular for over 70 days.
That same day, Top Gun: Maverick was sixth most popular on Paramount+ in the U.S. It had fallen in the rankings behind PAW Patrol: Air Rescue (No. 1), Valiente: A Tracker Story (No. 2), The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (No. 3), PAW Patrol: Rescue Wheels (No. 4), and Gasoline Alley (No. 5). This came after briefly reaching the top spot again on May 5.
The recent popularity of Top Gun: Maverick on streaming could be because both it and the original Top Gun are coming back to theaters on May 13th. This special re-release celebrates the 40th anniversary of the first film.
Despite being available for a while, Top Gun: Maverick continues to attract viewers on streaming platforms. It’s been in the top 10 movies on Paramount+ for an impressive 628 days – over half of the time since it became available on December 22, 2022. This shows just how remarkably popular and enduring the Tom Cruise film has been, making it one of the biggest hits of recent years.
