As a total movie and TV buff, I’ve seen a lot of book adaptations on Netflix, and honestly, one of their newer psychological thrillers is right up there with the best they’ve ever done. Netflix really knows how to deliver in this genre – I’m still thinking about Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen from March 2026, which was dark, funny, and totally kept me guessing!
However, the streaming service has also had success adapting popular thriller novels into new shows, and this strategy often works well. For example, Netflix’s acclaimed five-season thriller You was based on the book series by Caroline Kepnes, and their recent hit His & Hers was also adapted from a book.
His And Hers Is One Of Netflix’s Best Book Adaptations
Inspired by Alice Feeney’s 2020 novel, His & Hers, the show is a suspenseful murder mystery taking place in a small town in Georgia. It centers on Tessa Thompson as Alice, a reporter with a difficult past who returns home to investigate a string of disturbing murders. The victims are people she grew up with, and to complicate matters, Jon Bernthal plays Jack Harper, a quiet local police officer who also happens to be her ex-husband.
Alice is haunted by her past as she works on a new case, and Jack wonders if his ex-wife might be connected to the murders. Though the story of His & Hers seems like it could follow familiar tropes, author Feeney delivers a surprisingly original Southern Gothic tale that consistently subverts expectations.
Okay, so as a mystery fan, I have to say it’s darkly satisfying watching all of Alice’s awful friends start disappearing. The movie His & Hers cleverly hints that they maybe deserved what they get, which adds a whole other layer. But honestly, the director, Feeney, is a master! The plot moves so quickly and has so many twists, even I, someone who thinks they’s pretty good at guessing whodunnits, was completely surprised by the ending. It really keeps you guessing until the very last moment.
There Are More Alice Feeney Adaptations On The Way
His & Hers is a captivating story that skillfully blends emotional character work with a suspenseful, chilling murder mystery, culminating in a shocking twist. Unlike the similarly well-done Netflix series The Hunting Wives, which leans into a more over-the-top and fun style, His & Hers is surprisingly moving despite its graphic content.
Good news for fans of the psychological thriller! While there won’t be a second season of His & Hers, another project from author Alice Feeney is already in the works with Netflix. Suzanne Mackie, an executive producer on The Crown, secured the rights to Feeney’s popular 2021 novel, Rock, Paper, Scissors, some time ago.
I was so excited when Netflix announced they were adapting Rock, Paper, Scissors way back in 2021, even before the book came out! Now that His & Hers has been such a hit, I’m guessing that original project will get some renewed attention. That means we fans of their book adaptations probably won’t have to wait too long for another awesome show like His & Hers!
