As a sci-fi fanatic, I gotta say, Netflix really delivers. There’s this one show in particular that just wrapped up three seasons, and honestly, the way they stuck the landing with the finale was incredible, especially considering how deep and complicated the story got. Netflix has become a powerhouse for original shows – some are genuinely all-time greats, and they’ve made sure to cover pretty much every genre you can think of.
Netflix offers a diverse range of science fiction shows for all tastes, and one of its most highly regarded series is Dark. Created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, Dark premiered on Netflix in 2017 and ran for three seasons, earning widespread critical praise. The show is known for being incredibly intelligent and complex, yet it managed to deliver a satisfying conclusion that felt surprisingly seamless.
Netflix’s Dark Had One Of The Best Series Finales In Recent Memory
Dark is a German science fiction thriller set in the town of Winden. The story begins in 2019 with the disappearance of Mikkel, a young boy who vanishes one night while out with his siblings and friends. This disappearance happens alongside another missing person case and the discovery of a young boy’s body, but the reasons behind these events are far more complicated and surprising than they initially seem.
When Mikkel vanishes, his father, police officer Ulrich, and Jonas, a friend of his sister, both begin investigating and uncover the shocking truth: time travel is at play. Even more surprisingly, they discover Mikkel has been sent into the past and will eventually become Jonas’s father. This is just the first layer of a much larger and incredibly complicated network of connections within the town of Winden.
With a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Dark is widely considered one of the greatest sci-fi shows ever made. It’s praised for its clever writing, intricate plot, originality, well-managed pacing, strong character development, and excellent acting. The show remained consistently high-quality throughout its run and delivered a particularly satisfying finale, ranking among the best in recent television.
| Season | Rotten Tomatoes Critics Score |
| 1 | 90% |
| 2 | 100% |
| 3 | 97% |
The show Dark concluded its characters’ stories beautifully and resolved the central mystery in a way that felt complete and satisfying. While it could have taken an easier, less impactful path to resolve its complex plotlines, the creators instead crafted a clever and emotionally resonant ending that enhanced the show’s overall quality and allowed the characters to grow. There were no lingering questions or potential for further seasons.
The finale of Dark doesn’t offer a neat and happy resolution, or a last-minute miracle save. Instead, it provides a fitting and natural conclusion to the characters’ complex journeys, ultimately serving the greater good, even if it meant tragic outcomes for some.
Dark Is Still One Of Netflix’s Most Criminally Overlooked Shows
Netflix offers a wide variety of excellent TV shows, including many from around the world. Unfortunately, language often prevents these international shows from reaching a wider audience. Many viewers hesitate to watch them, either disliking dubbed audio or preferring not to use subtitles.
One challenge for Dark was its intricate plot and complex ideas. While this depth was ultimately one of the show’s greatest assets, it often proved to be a hindrance. Additionally, the marketing created the impression that Dark was a grown-up version of Stranger Things, which led to some viewers being surprised by its unique and different approach.
Compared to many other sci-fi thrillers, Dark unfolds at a deliberately slower speed, which might not appeal to everyone used to faster-paced shows. However, that doesn’t diminish its quality – it remains one of the best series Netflix has ever produced. With time, hopefully more people will discover and appreciate it.
