Netflix’s new version of the popular 1970s pirate show is quickly becoming a hit, attracting lots of viewers and currently ranking as the #7 most-watched show on the platform. Its popularity is likely due to the enduring appeal of the original series.
I just finished watching Sandokan, and wow, what a ride! It’s a classic adventure story, ripped right from the pages of Emilio Salgari’s novels and set in 19th-century Borneo. The series follows Sandokan, nicknamed the “Tiger of Malaysia,” a charismatic pirate who becomes a rebel leader fighting against the British Empire. Things get really interesting when he falls for the British Consul’s daughter – a romance that threatens to unravel everything he’s built. But the real tension comes from Lord James Brooke, a ruthless pirate hunter obsessed with capturing Sandokan and erasing his name from history. It’s a thrilling cat-and-mouse game with high stakes and plenty of action.
It’s a Campy, Adventurous Good Time
Viewers generally seem to be enjoying the show, but many feel the eight-episode format—a common trend with streaming series—doesn’t allow the story to breathe. This makes the pacing feel rushed and doesn’t give Sandokan enough time to fully develop its plot and characters. One viewer commented, “The show looks authentic and the scenery is beautiful, but even with eight hours, everything feels hurried. Characters show up conveniently when needed and sometimes act strangely to move the story forward, and their relationships feel underdeveloped. It’s still an engaging story, but I hope the ending is strong.”
Despite some issues with the speed of the story, one viewer highly praised the first season, calling it a dynamic and interesting series. They loved how each episode ended on a cliffhanger, making them eager to continue watching. Initially hesitant, the viewer was pleasantly surprised by the well-developed plot, filled with twists and suspense. They also found the characters believable and engaging, and wholeheartedly recommend the show.
