As a total movie buff, I’m excited to see Hulu really beefing up its sci-fi selection this May! They just added a bunch of stuff, including some titles that slipped under the radar before. I was thrilled to find a forgotten gem originally on Netflix, alongside familiar favorites like Will Smith’s I, Robot and Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds remake from ’05. But honestly, the real surprise was discovering a seriously underrated monster movie that went straight to streaming – it’s a must-see if you’re into that kind of thing!
The movie Love and Monsters is now available on Hulu as of May 1st. Directed by Michael Matthews, this adventure follows Joel, played by Dylan O’Brien, who ventures out of his underground shelter seven years after a monster apocalypse. He faces a perilous 80-mile trek across monster-filled lands to reconnect with his high school sweetheart. Love and Monsters arrived on Hulu six years after its initial release, which was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally planned for a theatrical release, the film instead debuted on demand in the U.S., with Netflix distributing it internationally.
Love and Monsters Is One of the Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies of the Decade
It’s unfortunate that Love and Monsters didn’t get the recognition it deserved due to its difficult release. While many people have forgotten about it, those who have seen it overwhelmingly agree it’s a really good film and worth watching. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a “Certified Fresh” rating with a 94% score, calling it a “winner” that’s “warm-hearted, funny, and likeable.” Viewers also loved it, giving the movie an impressive 89% rating.
It’s no surprise that Love and Monsters is getting rave reviews. The movie successfully combines several appealing elements: it’s a thrilling adventure, a sweet love story, and a classic coming-of-age tale, all set during a monster-filled apocalypse. The film follows Joel as he bravely ventures out of his safe zone to reconnect with his high school crush, facing giant crabs, ants, and frogs along the way. Think of it as Zombieland meets an 80s teen movie – it’s fun, heartwarming, and visually impressive, with fantastic creature designs and a well-developed world. Plus, the characters are memorable, especially Boy, Joel’s lovable dog companion.
What’s New on Hulu?
While Love and Monsters is a good watch, Hulu has plenty of other new movies in May. You can also find Disney’s Holes and the Descendants films, along with classics like Minority Report and Philadelphia, and comedies like White Chicks. Keep an eye out for We Bury the Dead (May 8th), Alien: Romulus (May 21st), and Afraid (May 28th), which will be added later in the month.
