Netflix’s Horror TV Show With 93% on RT Has One of the Best Jump Scares I’ve Ever Seen (& I Don’t Scare Easily)

If you’re looking for some spooky entertainment this Halloween, there’s plenty to choose from! New horror movies like *Black Phone 2*, *Shelby Oaks*, *The Strangers: Chapter 2*, *Him*, and *The Conjuring: Last Rites* are hitting theaters, and streaming services are packed with classic scary movies. And don’t forget TV – when Halloween rolls around, even shows can get pretty creepy. As a big horror fan, I thought I’d seen everything, but there’s still one jump scare that genuinely gives me chills.

Released in 2018 on Netflix, *The Haunting of Hill House* quickly became a hit and helped establish director Mike Flanagan’s reputation. The ten-episode series follows five siblings as they deal with a difficult life change by moving into Hill House. Through flashbacks and present-day scenes, we learn that the house was haunted when they were children, and those spirits continue to affect them as adults. The story centers on the siblings confronting the traumatic events of their past and realizing the ghosts of Hill House are still very much active.

Over the course of the show’s ten episodes, unsettling moments and unexpected twists combine tragedy and fright to great effect. A particularly memorable jump scare, which inspired this discussion, happens in the eighth episode during an argument between Theodora and Shirley. What makes it so effective is how sudden it is – the characters are simply in a car, and the ghostly apparition of their deceased sister appears and screams at them with no warning. Even while researching this scene for this article, it was still genuinely frightening, demonstrating just how well-executed it is as a jump scare.

The Many Hauntings of Mike Flanagan

As a huge horror fan, I can confidently say that *The Haunting of Hill House* is one of the best and most genuinely frightening TV series out there. It’s funny, though, because some of its biggest competition actually comes from other shows by the same creator, Mike Flanagan! He’s done *Midnight Mass*, *The Haunting of Bly Manor*, *The House of Usher*, and *The Midnight Club*, and everyone seems to have a different favorite. Honestly, I go back and forth between *The Haunting of Hill House* and *Midnight Mass* when I try to pick a personal favorite. But if we’re talking about which one is *scariest*? It’s definitely *Hill House*, hands down.

This Netflix series relies on both sudden shocks and a slow-burning sense of dread that sticks with you long after you finish watching. Without giving away any key plot points, the story behind the ‘Bent Neck Lady’ is still considered one of the most genuinely shocking moments in horror. While ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ can be a difficult watch emotionally, that actually makes the horror even more effective. The show’s well-developed characters mean the scary moments feel much more impactful.

Mike Flanagan’s next projects won’t be appearing on Netflix for a while. He’s currently working on a new installment in *The Exorcist* film series and developing a television adaptation of Stephen King’s *Carrie*. Flanagan is a longtime fan of King and hopes to adapt more of his stories in the future. If you haven’t watched *The Haunting of Hill House* yet, it’s considered one of the scariest TV shows ever made – be prepared for some serious scares!
