Netflix is becoming a major player in animation, expanding its offerings with both American-made shows and original anime. Recently, the streaming service tapped a well-known and successful creative team to develop another funny and often outrageous animated series. While a second season of Mating Season hasn’t been officially announced, early viewership numbers suggest it could follow in the footsteps of Big Mouth and become a hit.
According to FlixPatrol, the animated series Mating Season is currently the sixth most popular show on Netflix. While it’s behind shows like The Boroughs, Nemesis, and The Roast of Kevin Hart, it’s the top-performing animated series on the platform right now. It even surpassed Devil May Cry in viewership, which is impressive considering how quickly that video game adaptation gained popularity. We don’t have the complete weekly data yet since Mating Season launched on May 22nd, but it will be interesting to see how well this adult-oriented wildlife series performs over its first week.
Mating Season’s Arrival

The new animated series, Mating Season, is similar to the popular Netflix show Big Mouth – which ran for eight seasons and even got its own spin-off, Human Resources. While Big Mouth followed kids navigating puberty, Mating Season focuses on the relationships of various animals. Currently, the show has a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it a “fresh” series. It boasts an impressive voice cast including Sarah Silverman, Abbi Jacobson, Vanessa Bayer, Aidy Bryant, Jason Alexander, and many other well-known actors.
I recently learned from producer Andrew Goldberg about how Mating Season came to be. It actually started while we were finishing up Big Mouth. We really enjoyed working with the same team – especially our supervising director, Anthony Lioi – and wanted to keep that going. As we brainstormed, we realized there were tons of stories to tell within this world of animals, so we pitched it to Netflix as a potential series. The core idea is about a wolf trying to adjust to living with his girlfriend, which became a great way to explore the challenges of both wild animals adapting to a more settled life and people navigating relationships. It’s a metaphor that works on multiple levels, and we were all really excited about that.
