Netflix‘s new superhero series powers up across the streaming service’s charts.
Over the past few years, we’ve seen a surge in popular superhero shows, with major franchises like Marvel and DC launching new series such as WandaVision, Loki, and The Penguin. While superhero movies may not be drawing as many people to theaters as they once did, superheroes remain incredibly popular on both TV and in cinemas. Netflix has experimented with the genre, and that strategy is paying off – they’re expected to have a major global hit superhero show in 2026.
I’ve been digging into the Netflix numbers, and it looks like the South Korean superhero series, The WONDERfools, is really gaining traction! For the week of May 11th to the 17th, it landed at number six on the list of most-watched non-English TV shows globally, racking up an impressive 2.7 million views. Now, Netflix calculates views by total hours watched divided by the show’s length, and that number was enough to put The WONDERfools ahead of some other popular titles. We’re talking shows like season 3 of Thank You, Next and even season 1 of The Chestnut Man – though The Chestnut Man’s second season, Hide and Seek, is currently doing even better at number four. Definitely one to check out if you’re looking for something new!
I was so excited when all eight episodes of The WONDERfools dropped on Netflix on May 15th! It’s a really cool addition to their lineup of limited series. While it didn’t quite reach the top spot – shows like the new Money Heist spin-off, Berlin, and the South Korean fantasy My Royal Nemesis, plus the Mexican series Between Father and Son were all super popular that week – The WONDERfools still did amazingly well. I was thrilled to see it racked up 2.7 million views, which was enough to put it ahead of four other great shows!
Netflix’s most popular English shows worldwide show that The WONDERfools is performing better than several other series. It’s outperforming Raw (2.6 million views), Should I Marry A Murderer? (2.5 million views), Perfect Match season 4 (2.3 million views), and Danny Go! season 1 (2.1 million views). Currently, The WONDERfools is a top trending show in at least 25 countries, including Mexico, Nigeria, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, and Indonesia.
Currently, a South Korean superhero series is the most popular show on Netflix in the Philippines. While it’s doing well internationally, it hasn’t yet made it into the top 10 shows on Netflix in the United States. The U.S. chart is currently topped by the new crime thriller Nemesis, with other shows like Man on Fire and La Brea also ranking highly.
Set in late 1999, The WONDERfools captures the feeling of that era, including the anxieties surrounding the Y2K bug. The show features characters with superpowers, but they’re not typical heroes – they’re imperfect people who struggle to control their abilities, and they’re all connected by a mysterious conspiracy. In a review for ScreenRant, critic Tatiana Hullender praised the series, giving it a 9/10 and calling it a “kooky K-drama that brings something fresh to the superhero genre.” Because it was designed as a limited series, a second season of The WONDERfools is probably not going to happen.
