As a big Netflix watcher, I’ve noticed they’ve had some really successful original movies lately. April was a great month with films like Thrash and the new Adam Sandler comedy Roommates – both were huge hits! They were hoping to keep that momentum going with Apex, an action thriller about a woman caught in a terrifying chase with a killer while she’s in Australia. Well, Apex dropped on April 24th, and now the numbers are in to see how it performed.
From April 20th to 26th, Apex was the most popular movie on Netflix worldwide. It earned 38.2 million views and a total of 60.5 million hours of watch time, significantly outperforming films like 180 and Roommates. Apex was also the No. 1 movie in the United States during that week.
Why Apex Is a Streaming Hit on Netflix

Similar to successful comedies on Netflix, the movie Apex features well-known actors that will likely attract viewers. It stars Charlize Theron, who has been a popular actress for many years, proving her talent in action and dramatic roles in films like Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde, and Monster. Taron Egerton, known from Kingsman, hasn’t been in as many high-profile films recently, but remains a popular actor and continues to choose interesting projects. His movie She Rides Shotgun was a hit on Prime Video last year.
Beyond the two-star rating, Apex has received mostly positive feedback. It currently has a 65% score on Rotten Tomatoes. While it’s unlikely to become a legendary action film, most viewers agree it’s a well-made thriller with strong acting and skillful direction by Baltasar Kormákur. Critics have particularly praised the film’s immersive visuals and exciting action sequences, which help offset a somewhat predictable story. And at just 95 minutes long, Apex doesn’t waste any time.
Everything about Apex makes it a perfect streaming movie. It’s the kind of film you can relax with after a busy day. The exciting action and well-known actors will grab viewers’ attention and keep them hooked throughout the movie’s brisk pace. Apex might have been overlooked in theaters with so many other big releases, but streaming helps it stand out. Netflix subscribers are constantly looking for new things to watch, and an action movie with an Oscar winner and a popular actor from a spy series is definitely something that will catch their eye.
Action movies consistently perform well on Netflix. Popular series like Extraction are coming back for more, and War Machine was a big success earlier this year. Even movies not originally produced by Netflix, such as Escape Plan 2: Hades, have been popular. So, it’s no surprise that Apex quickly gained millions of views. Because of this success, Netflix plans to keep investing in action films, hoping to find another hit like Apex that will attract a large audience.
