Netflix’s latest hit movie demonstrates the success of a bold decision the company made a few years ago. As one of the leading streaming services, Netflix constantly needs to deliver high-quality films and shows to keep its audience engaged.
While shows like Stranger Things and KPop Demon Hunters become huge hits, many others don’t succeed, either due to their quality or simply bad timing. Given Netflix’s inconsistent track record, one recent success stands out, particularly because it follows a decision that initially received mixed reactions.
Knives Out 3’s Streaming Results Show Netflix’s Decision To Acquire Rights To Knives Out’s Sequels Is Still Paying Off
It’s no surprise that Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery topped Netflix’s list of most-watched movies for the week of December 8th-14th, considering how popular the Knives Out series consistently is. However, the success of Knives Out 3 on streaming is still noteworthy.
As a fan, I was a little surprised when Netflix bought the rights to two more Knives Out movies back in 2019. The first one did really well in theaters, earning over $312 million worldwide, so it felt like we were missing out on seeing those sequels on the big screen. It seemed like Netflix wanted to release them directly on their streaming service instead, which definitely changed things for the franchise.
The success of both Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery on Netflix’s streaming charts proves the platform made a smart decision by acquiring the series. The Knives Out films have consistently performed well, and have successfully transitioned to being released primarily through streaming without losing their audience.
Knives Out 3’s Box Office Results Show The Changes The Netflix Deal Has Brought To The Movie Series
The Knives Out movies have remained consistently popular, with all three receiving some limited showings in theaters. However, looking at the box office numbers reveals a shift in how the series is performing over time.
While Knives Out was a major success, earning $312 million, its sequels haven’t performed as well in theaters. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery brought in $15 million, and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery has earned even less – estimates from Box Office Mojo and The Numbers put its box office between $1.6 and $2.5 million.
These results weren’t entirely surprising, considering the sequels had a shorter run in theaters. However, the numbers clearly show how the series evolved, and how the agreement with Netflix changed the way the later movies were made and what they focused on.
