On Netflix, Monday Night Raw from WWE has become a regular feature, but with their upcoming venture, WWE and Netflix aim to delve deeper into the events beyond the ring. This new series is called WWE Unscripted, and today, fans were given a sneak peek at some of the significant instances and storylines that will be highlighted in the trailer for the show’s premiere. As you can observe in the video provided, WWE Unscripted is addressing substantial themes in its debut season, suggesting that the tradition of kayfabe may have truly come to an end if WWE continues to reveal behind-the-scenes aspects of more contemporary stories on a consistent basis.
WWE Unreal seems to offer a deeper, more intricate insight into the operations of WWE than before, setting it apart from past presentations. Although there have been numerous glimpses behind the curtains of events or significant instances throughout the years, these usually come after the fact and rarely reveal the actual discussions and preparations that lead to those ring moments.
As a die-hard film fan, I couldn’t help but notice that the first trailer for the upcoming wrestling flick offers more than just action in the ring. It provides glimpses into what seems like brainstorming sessions among the crew, as well as behind-the-scenes footage after the matches have ended.
For instance, there’s a tense moment between a bloodied Kevin Owens and Cody Rhodes post their ladder match, and another where CM Punk is being examined by officials backstage while Triple H inquires about his wellbeing.
In addition to delving deeply into John Cena’s dramatic heel turn, the series, WWE: Unreal, will explore the events and influences, including Triple H, The Rock, and Cena, that led up to this pivotal moment. Furthermore, the show promises a good dose of humor, as evidenced by a scene from WrestleMania 41 where Punk jokingly asks Charlotte Flair if she had an accident in the ring, referencing Punk’s famous stunt during SmackDown. WWE: The initial season of Unreal will consist of five episodes, and the titles provide a clear hint about the primary themes in each. The first episode is named “New Era,” suggesting the transition from Vince McMahon to Triple H, and the period governed by TKO. The second episode, titled “Push,” could be referring to Jey Uso’s rise and eventual dethroning of Gunther for the Heavyweight Championship.
Unreal is, “For the first time, get a peek into the WWE writers’ room and behind the scenes with your favorite WWE Superstars, where the drama offstage is just as intense as it is on stage.
Is This A Good Thing?
Previously, Kayfabe occupied a distinct space, quite unlike its current form after Unreal. Today, WWE has noticeably become more open about the creative process behind stories and narrative shifts, factoring in elements such as injuries and audience responses. However, there remains a hint of kayfabe in modern-day WWE, particularly when key personalities are at the heart of a storyline. This ambiguity between fiction and reality is precisely what continues to captivate us about WWE and professional wrestling.
When a series delves deeply into every aspect, it may provide clarity for some, but for others, it could be too much detail and a source of frustration. It’s a delicate balance, and celebrities like The Rock have faced criticism over their handling of storytelling, moving between different parts of the narrative. Clearly, it’s a fine line to walk.
WWE: Unreal hits Netflix on July 29th.
