The highly anticipated new Netflix series, a remake of a popular action thriller that’s been adapted for film and TV several times, is now available to stream. As Netflix’s last new show for April, it’s based on a five-book series that started in the 1980s. This is the first adaptation since a well-known movie from the mid-2000s, which was initially criticized but later gained a cult following.
The new Netflix series, Man on Fire, premiered on April 30th, with all episodes of its first season now available to stream. Created by Kyle Killen and starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, the show is inspired by the five-book series by A. J. Quinnell, beginning with the original novel. It reimagines the story of John Creasy – a former special forces soldier haunted by PTSD and alcoholism – who was famously portrayed by Denzel Washington in the 2004 film. This seven-episode series finds Creasy emerging from seclusion to protect the teenage daughter of a slain friend, all while pursuing those who ruined his life.
How Does Netflix’s Man on Fire Differ From Previous Adaptations?
Netflix’s Man on Fire is the third take on A.J. Quinnell’s novels, but it offers a fresh approach for fans. Unlike the previous films, this series expands the story, drawing from the first two books, Man on Fire and The Perfect Kill. The setting has also changed, moving the action to Rio de Janeiro from Italy and Mexico City in earlier adaptations. Instead of a kidnapping, the plot now centers on a protection mission following a terrorist attack, with Creasy tasked with safeguarding a teenage girl rather than a young child. This version of Creasy, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is also more reserved and quiet compared to Denzel Washington’s portrayal, and the series delves into his background as a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
The changes made to this story have created a dark and intense action thriller that many critics say is worth checking out. While it doesn’t have an official rating on Rotten Tomatoes yet, reviews are generally mixed to positive. Some critics feel the Netflix series is less inspiring than previous adaptations, especially the 2004 film, and that it’s missing some depth, but they praise the lead actor as a strong action hero. The show does deliver on exciting and impactful fight scenes, making it a good choice for a binge-watching session and keeping viewers engaged.
Will There Be a Man on Fire Season 2?
The future of the Netflix series Man on Fire is currently uncertain, as the streaming service hasn’t announced whether it will be renewed for a second season. The first season only covered the first two books in the series, meaning there are still three books that could be adapted into future episodes. Director and executive producer Steven Caple Jr. has publicly stated he’d like to continue the show, praising the complex character of John Creasy. However, fans will need to wait for Netflix to make a final decision and share any updates.
