Netflix’s Remake Of R-Rated Denzel Washington Action Movie Has A Few Hidden Easter Eggs, Confirms Director

Netflix’s Man on Fire director Steven Caple Jr. teases several subtle Easter eggs in the series.

I’m really excited about this new Netflix show! It’s based on a classic book, Man on Fire, which some of you might remember from the amazing 2004 movie with Denzel Washington. He played John Creasy, a tough ex-CIA guy who becomes a bodyguard and then goes after those who hurt the person he’s protecting. This time around, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is taking on the role, and I think he’ll do a fantastic job bringing this story to life again. It’s a seven-episode series, so they’ll have plenty of time to really explore the story.

Series creator Dennis Caple told ScreenRant that the show includes a subtle reference to director Tony Scott, though it’s likely only dedicated fans will notice it. He also mentioned there are other hidden nods to the 2004 film Man on Fire, and he’s glad these details weren’t removed during editing. You can read his full comments below.

There’s a subtle tribute to Tony Scott hidden in one scene, but it’s really only for fans who know his work. We managed to keep a few similar references throughout the editing process, and I’m happy with how they turned out. If you’re familiar with Tony Scott’s films, see if you can spot it!

This new Man on Fire series, created by a different team than the 2004 movie, will have some significant changes. However, according to the show’s creators, it will still include nods to the original film. These references will be subtle details for fans to enjoy, without overshadowing the new story.

Stephen Caple is an executive producer for the series and directed the first two episodes. He’s previously directed films like The Land, Creed II, and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Vicente Amorim directed episodes 3 and 4, Clare Kilner directed episodes 5 and 6, and Michael Cuesta directed episode 7. Kyle Killen wrote all the episodes and also serves as the showrunner and an executive producer.

Denzel Washington starred in the movie Man on Fire, alongside Dakota Fanning, Christopher Walken, Mickey Rourke, Radha Mitchell, Marc Anthony, and Giancarlo Giannini. The Netflix series features Bobby Cannavale as Paul Rayburn, a role previously played by Walken in the film. The series cast also includes Billie Boullet, Alice Braga, Scoot McNairy, Henry Tappan, and Paul Ben-Victor.

Abdul-Mateen, who recently starred as Simon Williams in the popular Marvel series Wonder Man, is joining Netflix’s Man on Fire. Wonder Man received very positive reviews, earning a 91% rating from critics and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Abdul-Mateen’s performance was particularly well-received, leading to a renewal for a second season.

All Man on Fire episodes come to Netflix on April 30.
