Netflix’s Upcoming Superhero Movie Is ‘The Boys Meets Invincible’

Netflix is adding a new superhero movie to its lineup, similar to popular shows like The Boys and Invincible. These Prime Video series have tapped into our long-standing interest in superpowered people and the ideas of heroes and villains, becoming huge hits in the process. While The Boys uses live action and Invincible is animated, both have successfully pushed the boundaries of the superhero genre and challenged common superhero storylines.

Both The Boys and Invincible offer a fresh take on the superhero genre. The Boys portrays a world where superheroes are often flawed and harmful public figures, actively opposed by a group of ordinary people. Invincible is an animated series about a teenage superhero who learns the truth about his father and other heroes—that they aren’t as noble as they seem. These unique storylines have clearly resonated with audiences, as evidenced by their high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes: 93% for The Boys and 99% for Invincible.

Netflix is creating a live-action movie based on the hit manga and anime series, My Hero Academia. Like other popular superhero stories, My Hero Academia offers a fresh take on the genre, challenging typical ideas about heroism.

Netflix’s Live-Action My Hero Academia Will Continue The Superhero Revolution

In the anime My Hero Academia, the main character, Izuku Midoriya, is different from most teens. While nearly everyone is born with superpowers called “quirks,” Izuku is born without any. This is a fresh take on the typical superhero story, where the hero usually has hidden powers that set them apart. Similar to the show The Boys, My Hero Academia subverts the familiar superhero tropes we often see.

In My Hero Academia, Izuku unexpectedly gains a superpower and gets his chance to train at U.A. Hero Academy, a school for aspiring superheroes. But even though superheroes are usually celebrated, public opinion is starting to shift. Like the story in Invincible, the series explores whether heroes are truly trustworthy and what it really means to be a hero.

I’ve noticed that My Hero Academia feels a lot more upbeat and optimistic than shows like The Boys or Invincible. Still, it’s part of this growing trend of superhero stories that really examine what it means to be a hero. After years of the classic Marvel and DC characters, and honestly, a bit of superhero burnout, these new shows are taking a fresh look at familiar ideas and tackling them in interesting ways.

When Will The My Hero Academia Movie Finally Arrive On Netflix

The story of My Hero Academia has been popular for a while, and Netflix’s new movie will be the first live-action version – a way to introduce this unique take on superheroes to even more people. However, Netflix has been taking its time with the project. They acquired the rights to adapt My Hero Academia in 2022, but the idea was first announced back in 2018. Progress has been slow, but there’s still reason to be optimistic.

Jason Fuchs, the screenwriter, is confirmed to be working on the My Hero Academia movie. He shared in late 2025 that he was currently writing the script. While promoting his series IT: Welcome to Derry, Fuchs explained that both projects center around young characters who are considered underdogs (according to Polygon). He also mentioned that casting hadn’t started yet, but the project was moving forward.

Writing a movie script can take years, and it’s looking like the My Hero Academia adaptation might be a long way off. However, if everything goes smoothly, it could potentially be on Netflix in around two years. While that’s not ideal, quality takes time. In the meantime, we can still enjoy shows like The Boys and Invincible.
