NetherRealm Studios hasn’t announced a new game since finishing updates for Mortal Kombat 1, but rumors suggest they’re developing a DC superhero fighting game. While many expected this to be another Injustice game, a reliable source claims NetherRealm may be considering a different name for the series.
MultiverSusie recently suggested on social media that it might be time to stop using the Injustice name, referencing a similar post from May 2025.
The Injustice games are set in a world where Superman turns into a villain and attempts to control the planet. This forces heroes like Batman to join forces with versions of themselves from other realities to stop him. The first game, released in 2013, was highly acclaimed for its story mode and diverse character selection. A sequel in 2017 continued the narrative, expanded the character roster, and offered even more single-player content.
The Injustice games were known for their compelling stories, which led to comic book tie-ins that added even more depth and introduced characters not featured in the games themselves. Now, with almost a decade since the last Injustice release, NetherRealm Studios may be planning a fresh start with a new DC superhero fighting game set in a different world.
NetherRealm Studios has several possibilities for a new fighting game similar to Injustice, and one strong contender is Absolute Universe. This comic series has earned praise for its compelling story, fresh takes on characters, and surprisingly intense violence – something not often seen in popular American comics.
This week, a Warner Bros. Games artist’s resume suggested they were working on Injustice 3. However, screenshots included with the resume listed two unconfirmed games – Hogwarts Legacy 2 and Injustice 2 – with the placeholder “TBD” next to their names. This suggests the final titles haven’t been decided, and the new fighting game might not actually be called Injustice 3.
Although the studio hasn’t officially announced a new Injustice game, Ed Boon, the studio head and game director, mentioned wanting to release Mortal Kombat 1 first. He explained this was to allow the development team to improve their tools before starting work on another Injustice title.
I remember reading an interview with Ed Boon from 2023 where he talked about their decision-making process. Basically, with everything going on with COVID, they wanted to prioritize everyone’s safety. That, along with a bunch of other factors, led them to focus on making another Mortal Kombat game. He seemed hopeful that after that, they’d be able to return to working on the Injustice series, which is what I’m really hoping for!
NetherRealm Studios’ most recent game, Mortal Kombat 1, launched on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. Although it has sold 8 million copies so far, the studio announced that it won’t be adding any more story-based downloadable content or new characters. The development team is now working on their next project, scheduled for release in 2025.
