I really don’t enjoy playing horror games, even though I like watching horror movies and generally appreciate the genre. It’s not that I’m not a fan of being scared, but the interactive nature of games is just too much for me. Having to actively move forward and not knowing what’s lurking around every corner has genuinely terrified me in the past, so I’ve mostly stopped playing them.
I’m drawn to the intriguing ideas behind many horror games, much like I am with horror movies. However, I haven’t been brave enough to actually play one all the way through. Luckily, a new game called Alien Deathstorm was just announced, and it feels like the perfect opportunity to finally dive into the horror genre. It plays on my fear of being alone and my love for sci-fi horror – it seems like a great fit!
Alien Deathstorm Looks Like A Perfect Blend Of Horror And Action

I never really cared much for horror games – they weren’t something I often thought about. I knew the famous titles, but I didn’t want to play them, mostly because I don’t like being scared, and also because none of them really appealed to me. That all changed when I saw the trailer for Resident Evil 7, one of the best games in the series. Suddenly, I wasn’t afraid of the game, but afraid that I wanted to play it. It was terrifying, yes, but what really scared me was how completely drawn in I was by its disturbing story and visuals. Ever since, I’ve been curious to explore the scary worlds of horror games, but I’m still too hesitant to actually start playing them.
I really enjoyed Alien: Isolation – it captured the atmosphere of the Alien movies and delivered a genuinely terrifying first-person horror experience. I played for a while, took out some enemies, briefly encountered the alien itself, and spent a lot of time hiding, but eventually had to stop. Since then, I’ve been searching for another Alien game that can recreate that feeling of horror, but maybe with a bit more action. Luckily, Alien Deathstorm, the new game from the creators of Sniper Elite and Atomfall, seems like it might be exactly what I’m looking for.
Alien Deathstorm feels more like the action-horror of Dead Space than the slower, more atmospheric Resident Evil 7. This means you have more control and freedom as you explore its scary world. The game gives you plenty of weapons to feel powerful, but the enemies are relentless and love to ambush you. Overall, it seems like exactly the kind of horror game I enjoy. Coming from Rebellion, the team behind the surprisingly good Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army series, I have high hopes for this one.
Alien Deathstorm Is Exactly The Kind Of Sci-Fi Horror We Need

It’s hard to say if Alien Deathstorm will be a good game. While the developers, Rebellion, have made some excellent titles in the past and aren’t afraid to try new things, it could still disappoint. However, even if it doesn’t succeed, Alien Deathstorm is the kind of horror game I’d love to see more of. We haven’t seen many big-budget games embrace action horror lately, even though it’s popular in horror movies.
I finally played Resident Evil 8, and it struck a good balance between the scary, up-close horror of Resident Evil 7 and the more action-oriented stuff from Resident Evil 4. The parts with Leon in Resident Evil 9 definitely delivered on the action side of things. But honestly, it feels like we haven’t seen anything quite like BioShock or Metro in a long time. I’ll admit, I’m not the biggest horror buff, so I might be missing a ton of new action horror games coming out. Still, it seems like the industry as a whole isn’t focusing on that kind of game as much as I’d like.
I find action-horror games easier to get into than many modern horror titles, which often focus on intense, unrelenting dread. I’ve enjoyed games like Bioshock, Left 4 Dead 2, Metro Exodus, Dead Island, and Dying Light because they let you feel powerful and overcome the scary elements. While I appreciate truly terrifying horror games and think they should push the genre forward, they can be too overwhelming for new players. I believe everyone should eventually try to conquer those challenging experiences, but action-horror provides a good starting point.
It’s reasonable to create horror games specifically for fans of the genre, but action horror offers a unique and enjoyable experience too. Games like Alien Deathstorm strike a good balance – they’re scary, but also let you fight back. This approach is great because it allows even those who get easily frightened, like me, to enjoy the game and have fun.
