With Season 5 potentially wrapping up The Lincoln Lawyer, a strong successor is already in the works. Michael Connelly’s novels have proven incredibly popular on streaming platforms. Bosch, featuring Titus Welliver, was one of Prime Video’s earliest successes, premiering way back in 2014 and running until 2021. That show spawned two spin-offs, Bosch: Legacy and Ballard, and its popularity likely helped Netflix decide to launch The Lincoln Lawyer in 2022.
I’m so excited to see David E. Kelley, the creator of The Lincoln Lawyer, adapting another Michael Connelly novel! It’s a shame Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller haven’t crossed over on screen – they’re brothers in the books, you know – but both shows have been huge hits. Now, Kelley’s tackling Nightshade, Connelly’s latest book, for HBO Max. It’s going to be called Welcome To Catalina and it sounds fantastic. The story follows a detective named Stilwell who gets sent to Catalina Island for a quiet assignment, but then a body turns up in the harbor and things get interesting. I can’t wait!
Welcome To Catalina Continues Great TV Trends
I’m really excited about this new show! It’s being written and produced by Kelly, the same brilliant mind behind The Lincoln Lawyer, and they’re working with the same team, which is a great sign. He’s had so much success before, bringing us shows like Big Little Lies on HBO, and even classics like Doogie Howser, M.D. and Ally McBeal. Plus, he recently had another hit with Margot’s Got Money Troubles on Apple TV, so I have a lot of faith in him delivering something amazing again.
The plan for Welcome to Catalina is interesting because it’s designed to be a show that comes back every year, similar to how traditional TV worked. It will have more episodes per season than most streaming shows, but at a lower cost. HBO and HBO Max successfully used this model with The Pitt, which many consider one of the best shows recently, and Welcome to Catalina is expected to follow suit. While it’s hard to say if it will be as popular, having shows return annually – instead of waiting a long time between seasons – is a welcome change.
This isn’t the first time Kelly has tried to adapt a story set on Catalina Island for television. He previously developed an adaptation of Michael Connelly’s short story Avalon – which first introduced the island setting – for ABC, but the project didn’t move forward. With two Harry Bosch novels featuring detective Mickey Haller already written (Ironwood is scheduled for 2026), there’s enough material for several seasons, and likely much more in the future. This suggests the series could potentially run for as long as popular shows like The Lincoln Lawyer and Bosch.
Fans can expect a new season of The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix around 2027. You can currently watch Bosch on Prime Video, and a release date for Welcome to Catalina hasn’t been announced yet.
