Netflix is creating a new animated movie based on Roald Dahl’s beloved book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. However, this version will feature a completely original story, different from any previous film adaptations. The movie is scheduled to be released on Netflix sometime next year, though an exact date hasn’t been announced yet.
Netflix’s Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory movie details revealed
Netflix is creating a new animated movie based on Roald Dahl’s classic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Set to come out in 2027, the film will reimagine the story with a fresh adventure, original music, and both new and familiar characters. It will keep the same British feel as the original. The animation is being done by Sony Pictures Imageworks, the studio behind films like KPop Demon Hunters and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Kit Connor, known for his role in Heartstopper, will be the voice of the new character, Charlie Paley. Plus, Taika Waititi—the acclaimed director and actor—will voice the quirky Willy Wonka. Waititi is also an executive producer on the project, alongside producers Aron Warner and Timothy Yoo, both Academy Award winners.
Jared Stern, the director of The LEGO Batman Movie, and Elaine Bogan, who has worked on shows like Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia and Spirit Untamed, directed the film.
The story follows Willy Wonka (Taika Waititi) after he’s been in prison – not a chocolate prison! – for turning a child into a blueberry. Once released, Wonka returns to his factory hoping to bring some joy to a gloomy world. However, he faces opposition from a teenager named Charlie Paley (Kit Connor) and his group of friends.
The story follows a new group of kids facing homelessness who come up with a daring plan: break into the Wonka factory, steal a valuable Wonka Bar, and use it to save their homes. However, like others before them who’ve entered the factory, they’re about to discover things are far more complicated than they expected.
Netflix announced a new ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ series five years after buying the Roald Dahl Story Company in 2021, which gave them the rights to the story.
