Digimon Story: Time Stranger is now available! It launched a little ahead of schedule on Steam, but starting October 3rd, players on both PC and PS5 can revisit the Digital World in this exciting new game. It seems many fans were eager to play, as Time Stranger quickly became a top seller on Steam after its release. The Digimon RPG is currently holding strong with a good number of players, and the majority of fans are really enjoying it. However, one choice regarding downloadable content (DLC) has left some players disappointed.
Similar to many games released today, Digimon Story: Time Stranger was available in several versions before it launched. Besides the Standard Edition, players could choose a Digital Deluxe Edition which included extra content like a Season Pass. A more expensive $120 Ultimate Edition with even more digital goodies, and a Collector’s Edition were also offered. A lot of players believed that for that price, the Ultimate Edition should have definitely included all available extras for Time Stranger at launch. However, that wasn’t the case, and some players are very upset about it.
Time Stranger Outer Dungeon DLC Alienates Players
At $120, the Ultimate Edition of Digimon Story: Time Stranger is quite expensive. It does come with a lot of downloadable content (DLC) and a Season Pass, though. Because of this, players who bought this version of the long-awaited Digimon game expected to have everything available right away. However, it’s been discovered that the game still has another way for players to spend more money with additional in-game purchases.
A little disappointed in you Bandai.

The feature we’re talking about is Time Stranger’s Outer Dungeons, which you can access through the In-Between Theater. This area offers another way to earn experience points and gather materials. However, if you try to start these dungeons from the menu, you’ll be directed to the PlayStation (or Steam) store. These dungeons require an additional purchase of $7.99 to unlock. For many players, releasing this content as a paid add-on at launch feels similar to the Mega Dimensions DLC controversy surrounding Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
A lot of players are choosing not to pay for this additional feature, and many who did regret it. It’s entirely optional content for leveling up your character – you can enjoy the game’s story and collect items without it. However, players who ventured into the Outer Dungeons often feel they make the game too simple. One player on Reddit, after trying the dungeons just once, explained that the Outer Dungeons “make the game too easy” by providing money and resources too quickly.

Okay, so this DLC gives us another way to grind for resources and experience, but honestly, a lot of us are pretty annoyed it dropped on day one without any warning. Time Stranger already costs $70 for the Standard Edition, which is a pretty big investment. And they already had options for us to spend more money on things like costumes and the Season Pass. Adding *another* paywalled feature right away isn’t sitting well with fans. Especially because this feature basically lets you skip the challenging grind that a lot of Digimon Story fans actually enjoy about the series.
However, some players actually enjoy having an extra area to play and earn rewards. Plus, since it’s completely optional, not purchasing it won’t hinder your gameplay at all. It’s simply another choice in the menu, like the Digifarm, that some players might decide to skip. Therefore, after getting past the initial surprise, the Outer Dungeons don’t really detract from the overall Time Stranger experience, even though players were initially surprised to find them.
What do you think about the Outer Dungeon DLC for Digimon Story: Time Stranger?
