New Disney Movie Will Officially End an 18 Year Trend (& It’s About Time)

Disney has updated its movie release schedule and is ending a practice it started in 2011. This is good news for fans, especially with so many highly anticipated films still on the way this year.

Disney is planning to release an animated movie in June 2029 – something it hasn’t done in nearly 20 years. The last summer release was the film Winnie the Pooh in 2011. It’s unusual for Disney, given how popular summer is for moviegoing, and they could have easily alternated summer releases with Pixar to ensure one of their studios had a new film out each year.

What’s Upcoming for Disney

Disney is rapidly acquiring studios and the rights to many popular franchises, meaning a huge number of films are planned for release in the coming years. While some projects are still under wraps – like a movie scheduled for summer 2029 and a Pixar film coming in November 2029 – we already know about several upcoming titles. These include additions to the Star Wars universe like The Mandalorian and Grogu and Star Wars: Star Fighter, as well as Marvel films such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Avengers: Doomsday, and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Disney has a lot of movies in the works, with release dates planned all the way through 2029 – even beyond films like Toy Story 5, Hexed, and The Bluey Movie. According to Deadline, Disney is adjusting its schedule; a currently unnamed Disney movie was moved from July 28, 2028, to February 18, 2028. They’ve also set aside November 10, 2028, for a new Disney animated film, which means a previously scheduled Marvel movie on that date has been removed. In 2029, Disney has planned releases for unnamed films on February 16, March 9, May 25, August 3, October 5, and November 9. Marvel fans can also look forward to two more movies from Marvel Studios in 2029, coming out on May 4 and July 13.
