Xbox head Phil Spencer recently shared an update about the Forza series, which will please many fans – though not everyone will be thrilled, depending on what they prefer. Before 2012, the Forza franchise consisted only of the Motorsport series. The key difference is that Forza Horizon offers a more casual, open-world racing experience, while Forza Motorsport is a realistic, track-focused simulation. It’s also worth noting that these games are developed by different teams: Playground Games creates the Horizon games, and Turn 10 Studios handles Motorsport.
The Forza Horizon series quickly became more successful and received better reviews than the original Forza Motorsport games, leading to a decline in interest in the latter. Forza Horizon 5 is a huge hit, with a score of 92 on Metacritic and over 20 million players – it’s been Xbox’s biggest success on the Series X console, as we noted in our review. The newest Forza Motorsport game, released in 2023, received a respectable 84 on Metacritic, but was poorly received by players and didn’t boost sales or Game Pass subscriptions. As a result, Xbox is clearly prioritizing Forza Horizon over Forza Motorsport. A new Forza Horizon 6 is planned for next year, while development of another Forza Motorsport has been paused. While this is disappointing for fans of Forza Motorsport, Xbox head Phil Spencer has assured them that the series isn’t canceled entirely.
Phil Spencer Update
Look, as a Forza fan, I get why people were a little worried when they scaled back the team at Turn 10. But honestly, sometimes we just need to prioritize games that are coming out sooner, you know? Xbox has a ton of projects going on, and they want to make sure the developers aren’t being rushed or burned out. This setup lets them give teams the breathing room they need, which I think is a good thing in the long run.
If you prefer the open-world racing of Forza Horizon over the more simulation-focused Forza Motorsport, this news might not be what you wanted. Some believe Turn 10 Studios should concentrate on helping with Forza Horizon games instead. However, for fans who only enjoy Forza Horizon and feared its future was uncertain, Spencer has confirmed that the series will continue.
We’d love to hear your thoughts! Leave a comment below or join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum. What do you think – should Xbox concentrate on the Forza Horizon series, or continue releasing Forza Motorsport games too?
