Rumors are circulating that Sony may hold a “State of Play” event this week, and industry insider Tom Henderson thinks we could finally see the next God of War game there. On the latest Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, the team discussed potential games that might be featured, and speculated the event could primarily highlight titles from other developers.
Henderson confirmed he’d heard rumors about the upcoming State of Play focusing on third-party games, but also mentioned hearing last month that a God of War announcement was expected in April. While others wondered if the reveal might happen in June instead, Henderson questioned whether the State of Play would only feature third-party news, or if it would also include a God of War announcement. He added that Insomniac Games has hinted at a Spring announcement, which could potentially be another trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine.
He admitted he wasn’t sure what to believe, but acknowledged there were a lot of rumors circulating about Sony’s upcoming games.
The hosts also wondered if Sony might follow the example of games like Ghost of Yōtei and hold a separate presentation specifically for Marvel’s Wolverine. This would allow the upcoming rumored State of Play to concentrate on games from other developers.
Over the weekend, industry insider NateTheHate started rumors about a possible State of Play event happening this week, reportedly on April 16th. Although Sony was already planning a showcase before its major June event, NateTheHate shared the potential date on social media, clarifying it wasn’t confirmed. He also suggested this State of Play would likely focus on games from developers other than Sony themselves, but admitted he wasn’t completely sure.
Although we don’t have many concrete details about the next main God of War game, some reports have offered clues about its story. One rumor from March suggested the game would focus on Faye, the wife of Kratos. This is interesting because Faye dies at the beginning of God of War (2018), so it’s unclear where this new game would fit into the overall timeline.
The report suggests this new installment will focus more on direct action compared to the last two God of War games, which were rooted in Norse mythology. Considering the games established that Kratos’s Leviathan Axe originally belonged to Faye, it’s probable the weapon will reappear in some capacity.
A data discovery from February, related to God of War Ragnarök, revealed some hidden cutscenes that may offer clues about the future of the series. These scenes included Athena talking about the events of God of War Ragnarök with other powerful, otherworldly beings.
