New Justice League Unlimited Game Lets You Play As DC’s Most Iconic Heroes

The Justice League—featuring iconic heroes like Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman—is a cornerstone of DC Comics. While fans have previously been able to play as some of these characters in games, a new game based on the Justice League Unlimited series promises a much larger roster. And with a well-known writer on board, the project is shaping up to be something special. Here’s everything you need to know.

Warner Bros. Discovery is partnering with D20 Culture to create a roleplaying game called Justice League Unlimited: The Roleplaying Game. Based on the popular Justice League Unlimited comic series – known for featuring a huge cast of DC superheroes – the game lets you play as established heroes or design your own. Excitingly, Mark Waid, a writer for the Justice League Unlimited comics, is co-authoring the game, and it will be available to support on Gamefound this July.

Justice League Unlimited’s Roster Holds Massive Potential

The Justice League Unlimited: The Roleplaying Game lets you create your own characters or play as established DC heroes within the DC Universe. It’s based on the popular Justice League Unlimited animated series, which greatly expanded the team’s lineup, and this gives the game a lot of exciting possibilities.

Man, the character list in Justice League Unlimited was incredible! It wasn’t just the big names like Superman and Batman, but tons of lesser-known heroes I actually really liked. Plus, you could make your own hero, which was a huge deal. You could build them from the ground up – Kryptonian, Amazon, Meta-Human, even a Cyber Construct! And it didn’t stop there; you got to decide how your hero acted – were they inspiring, intimidating, or somewhere in between? So many choices!

After you design your hero, you’ll embark on a large-scale story that’s about more than just defeating enemies. It also delves into what it means to be a hero and the responsibilities that come with the role. The game begins with players answering five key questions – the Justice League’s core principles – which establish their character’s values. These answers also shape how players collaborate with the Game Master, or “Editor,” as they tell the story of their hero’s actions.

Players will improve their characters by spending Ascension Points (PAX) to boost stats like Potency, Agility, and Mind. Eventually, they’ll gain incredible abilities, even on a planetary scale. These powers could range from super strength and flight to magic, telepathy, advanced technology, or even the use of powerful rings – and that’s just a glimpse of what’s possible.

Throughout the game, players will experience various scenarios, including action-packed Combat Scenes, urgent Saving Scenes where they rescue people from disasters, and quieter Interlude Moments for character development and recovery. These Interlude Moments let players explore their hero’s personality, build relationships, and prepare for future challenges. Also featured are The Crisis Die, which add an element of unpredictability. These scenes range from battling common enemies to facing world-ending threats.

The game also features a Crisis Die. Rolling it triggers major, history-altering events, such as alien invasions, characters losing their powers, or the unexpected appearance of a time traveler.

Mark Waid, a veteran DC Comics writer and co-creator of this project, explained that tabletop games are a fantastic way to connect fans with stories and characters in innovative ways. His main goal with the Justice League Unlimited Roleplaying Game was to create a fresh story that feels true to the existing universe while also giving players the freedom to shape their own adventures. He promises to share more details soon.

Peterson Rodrigues, CEO of D20 Culture, expressed excitement about a new project with comic book legend Mark Waid, building on DC’s rich history of iconic superheroes. The Justice League Unlimited Roleplaying Game represents a significant step forward for the company, offering players a fresh and immersive way to experience the world of the Justice League. D20 Culture is eager to share this game with fans worldwide.

Justice League Unlimited: The Roleplaying Game will launch its Gamefound campaign this July.
