New Look at Cult Sci-Fi Comic Adaptation Revealed (& It Looks Great)

A movie adaptation of the popular sci-fi comic book Rogue Trooper is on the way, and early previews look promising. Rogue Trooper originally gained a following as a comic series and was later turned into video games in the early 2000s. The film is being directed by Duncan Jones, known for his work on Moon (2009) and Source Code (2011). Whether Rogue Trooper will reach the same level of critical success as those films remains to be seen, as his more recent movies, Warcraft (2016) and Mute (2018), received mixed reviews. This is Jones’s fifth film, and initial promotional materials suggest he understands the source material well.

The initial glimpse of the project is a movie poster with a retro design. It was posted on Reddit, and the description explains that Rogue Trooper tells the story of a lone super-soldier seeking revenge, aided by a gun, backpack, and helmet that hold the personalities of his fallen comrades.

What Fans Can Expect From Rogue Trooper

Rogue Trooper is a science fiction story originally published in the British comic 2000 AD, the same comic famous for the Judge Dredd series which began in 1977. While Judge Dredd has a long history, Rogue Trooper first appeared in 1981, created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons (who later co-created Watchmen). The story centers around Rogue, a genetically engineered soldier who carries the personalities of his fallen comrades within his gear. He’s on a quest to find the general who betrayed his unit. The series was reimagined in 1989 with a new character, Friday, but that version concluded in 1996. Rogue returned in 1999, and new stories are still being published today.

As a big fan, it’s awesome to see how much life the comic has had beyond the pages! Over the years, they’ve turned it into novels, board games, and even video games. I remember playing the Rogue Trooper PC game back in ’06, and then there was the Wii version, Rogue Trooper: Quartz Zone Massacre, a few years later. More recently, they released Rogue Trooper Redux, a really cool remaster, on PS4, Switch, and Xbox. And the movie! It’s been a long time coming, with Grant Morrison originally working on the script and Duncan Jones set to direct way back in 2018. Finally, they’ve wrapped up production on the animated film – I’m so excited for that, and I heard Aneurin Barnard is doing the voice for Rogue!

The new artwork for the upcoming film has a vintage style that suits the story. Animated using the Unreal Engine 5, Rogue Trooper is leveraging video game technology – a natural choice given the popularity of the original game. Despite this, its commercial success isn’t guaranteed. One commenter on Reddit predicted it will likely become a beloved cult classic, similar to the 2000AD film Dredd, but might not perform well in theaters. Rogue Trooper will debut at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2026, but plans for a wider release in theaters or on streaming services haven’t been announced.
