The reports were right! Warhorse Studios has officially confirmed they are developing a game based on The Lord of the Rings, just as many sources said last month.
Warhorse, the studio that created the popular medieval game Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, recently won a BAFTA Games Award for its excellent story in April.
Both KCD2 and the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance put you in the role of Henry, an aspiring knight. You’ll experience an expansive open world filled with compelling stories as you ride horses and engage in sword combat.
Creating those earlier games clearly gave Warhorse valuable experience, now as they begin their own journey to deliver a truly unforgettable Lord of the Rings game for fans.

Warhorse Studios recently shared on social media that they’re ready to unveil their latest project, confirming rumors that have been circulating.
The post also mentioned two game projects: a role-playing game set in the world of Middle-earth, and a new game similar to Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
Fans concerned that the Lord of the Rings project would delay Kingdom Come: Deliverance can rest easy. Warhorse Studios is currently developing both franchises at the same time, and we’re excited to see what they create.
Warhorse Studios, the creators of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, has been reorganized under a new company called Fellowship Games, which is owned by their parent company, Embracer Group. Fellowship Games will concentrate on developing games based on existing intellectual property, or ‘IP’.
Several other game developers, like Crystal Dynamics—the team behind the upcoming Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis—and 4A Games (known for Metro 2039), are also joining Fellowship Games.
This news comes after reports that Amazon scrapped a large-scale online game based on Lord of the Rings. However, we’re excited that Warhorse Studios is still delivering a role-playing game instead.
At the BAFTA Games Awards in April, we asked Tom McKay – the voice of Henry in the Kingdom Come: Deliverance games – which character from The Lord of the Rings he’d most like to portray.
He said there were plenty of possibilities. He explained that these worlds have really well-developed, intricate characters, and he thought someone like Aragorn would fit in perfectly.
There are a lot of possibilities, and honestly, if someone asked me to take on the role, I’d probably move away from anything too similar to Henry. I enjoy playing a wide range of characters.

Creating video games takes a long time – often several years – so don’t expect to see big updates on the new Lord of the Rings game anytime soon.
We likely won’t know when the game will be released for several years. While we’re hoping for a surprise announcement, it’s important to remember that creating large, open-world games takes a significant amount of time.
We’ll let you know as soon as we have any news about the new Lord of the Rings game. Stay tuned for updates!
