Disney celebrated Star Wars Day by releasing a four-episode preview of The Mandalorian and Grogu on Disney+. This year’s celebration is particularly exciting, as the Maul – Shadow Lord series just concluded and a new Star Wars movie is coming to theaters soon. The Mandalorian and Grogu brings the story to the big screen after a seven-year gap, and it’s a fresh take on the franchise – it’s not connected to the Skywalker family saga, and unlike Solo and Rogue One, it doesn’t even have indirect ties to that story.
A four-episode preview of the upcoming film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is now available on Disney+. Unlike most Star Wars films, it doesn’t begin with a scrolling opening crawl; instead, it uses a still title card similar to the one in Solo. Here’s what the title card says:
“The evil GALACTIC EMPIRE has fallen.
Ex-Imperial Warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy, plotting the Empire’s return.
The fledgling NEW REPUBLIC has begun to reunite the galaxy.
In the dangerous and lawless regions of the Outer Rim, the Mandalorian and his young companion, Grogu, are tracking down former Imperial soldiers who are now on the run.
This film does something different than previous Star Wars movies. Traditionally, Star Wars films begin with sweeping shots of spaceships flying through space or past planets – a style established by the very first film. However, The Mandalorian and Grogu starts right in the middle of the action, on a snowy planet, with a famous battle scene involving AT-ATs.
Star Wars Has Made the Right Call With The Mandalorian & Grogu
The decision to skip the traditional opening crawl in 2016’s Rogue One caused debate among Star Wars fans. Lucasfilm explained they wanted to visually distinguish the standalone stories from the main Skywalker saga films, and Solo followed the same approach. Now, with Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan leading Lucasfilm, we’re seeing that style continue, particularly with The Mandalorian and Grogu. This naturally leads to questions about whether future Star Wars films will bring back the opening crawl. With Simon Kinberg developing a new trilogy, the return of the crawl would signal that these films are intended as Episodes X, XI, and XII.
The absence of a large Imperial ship, like a Star Destroyer, makes sense for this time in the Star Wars story. It shows that neither the remains of the Empire nor the New Republic currently control massive fleets. Din Djarin is working in the dangerous Outer Rim, completing jobs for Colonel Ward and eliminating smaller Imperial leaders who’ve seized control of individual planets. This era isn’t defined by huge fleets and full-scale battles – not yet.
This new Star Wars movie might not appear huge at first, but the recent promotion hints at a much larger story. It seems like this could be the start of a new galactic war, with the Empire secretly rebuilding its power. The return of Grand Admiral Thrawn in Ahsoka Season 1, and the promise of large-scale spaceship battles in Season 2 between his forces and the New Republic, suggests The Mandalorian and Grogu are central to something much bigger than it appears.
