After a 40-year wait, fans are finally getting another live-action Masters of the Universe movie, and Mattel has even bigger plans for the franchise. Along with the upcoming film, a new novel will expand on the world of Eternia, and another project is officially in the works. While Masters of the Universe hasn’t completely disappeared over the years – with recent animated series on Netflix from 2021 to 2024 created by Kevin Smith – this represents a fresh start for the series.
The latest issue of The Toy Book magazine announced that Mattel will release a new animated Masters of the Universe series this summer on YouTube. This is part of a larger, multi-year plan for the franchise. According to Nick Karamanos, a Senior Vice President at Mattel, the goal is to keep the property relevant for new generations of kids. Karamanos believes the recent movie will spark renewed interest in the original cartoon, predicting it will become the next retro favorite. Ultimately, a new animated series is exciting news, and fans now know when to expect it.
The New Masters of the Universe Series Is Coming in June
Matthew Brown, the creator and director of the project, recently announced details on Instagram about the upcoming animated reboot of Masters of the Universe for Mattel. The series will premiere on YouTube on June 10th. While the official title hasn’t been released, Brown’s LinkedIn profile indicates it’s called Masters of the Universe: Tales from Eternia and will consist of 20 episodes.
There’s been a lot of talk about the upcoming animated series, and it seems likely to be made up of short episodes, given its 20-episode length. Previous reports have confirmed it won’t be a prequel; instead, the stories will probably connect to the existing movie. Mattel wants to expand the franchise, so creating a completely separate timeline for Masters of the Universe wouldn’t really fit their plans. Hopefully, the series will be popular and lead to more content in the future.
