Netflix has really delivered with its latest original film. Based on a story by Denis Johnson, the movie has earned incredibly high praise, with a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s quickly become the most popular streaming film this week. The movie is deeply moving and emotionally powerful, showcasing one of Joel Edgerton’s strongest performances yet – it feels both dreamlike and beautifully artistic.
Train Dreams tells the story of Robert Grainier, a man living in early 20th-century America as the country transforms from a wild, untamed place to a more modern one. Robert faces the loss of his parents and grows up working on the railroad in the Pacific Northwest. This work profoundly impacts him, exposing him to death and violence. He finds love with Gladys, and they build a life together, having a daughter and a home in the woods. However, as Robert’s job keeps him away from his family, tragedy occurs, and he must grapple with immense loss. According to Chuck Bowen of Style Weekly, the film’s somber tone and Edgerton’s compelling performance create a deeply affecting experience.
Train Dreams Pulls Off Tragedy In A Beautifully Haunting Way
While some critics found the film’s somber tone repetitive and incomplete, with one reviewer questioning enduring sadness over 90 minutes, they did acknowledge strong acting and beautiful scenery. However, the film isn’t about the sadness itself. Instead, it’s a story about finding peace and continuing to live even when life is difficult – a theme that’s far from boring.
I think Robert Granier is a really compelling character, an ordinary man building a life with his family in a rugged part of the Pacific Northwest. He doesn’t have much materially, but he feels so real – he embodies all the complexities of being human. While his specific hardships might not be universal, his reactions to life – the good and the bad – are something I think anyone can connect with. Train Dreams isn’t just a story; it’s a journey back to a wilder time, and it really stuck with me.
