New Nintendo Switch 2 Update Has Good News for Nintendo DS Pokemon Fans

Good news for Pokémon fans, especially those who remember playing on the Nintendo DS! The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is addressing issues with older games. Since its release last summer, the new console has had trouble playing games from previous systems reliably. Nintendo is now working to fix this, as many games weren’t functioning correctly, including some of their own titles.

As a big Pokémon fan, I was really frustrated when Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl kept crashing on my new Switch 2. It’s been happening since launch! Nintendo just announced an update that should fix those crashes specifically for those two games, which is great news. Honestly, it’s a little weird they didn’t say what the problem was or why it took so long to fix. And it’s not just these Pokémon games, either – I’ve heard about other older Switch games having trouble running on the new console, so hopefully Nintendo keeps working on the backward compatibility.

Classic DS Pokemon Games

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl came out in 2021 for the Nintendo Switch. These games are updated versions of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, which were originally released in 2006 for the Nintendo DS. While the remakes received a score of 73 on Metacritic—lower than the original games’ score of 85—they were still a huge commercial success, selling a combined 15 million copies by 2022.

While not everyone experienced crashes, a number of Nintendo Switch 2 users reported issues while playing certain Pokemon games. These problems were frequent enough that Nintendo actively worked to resolve them.
