Sony just released a new software update for both the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. While a larger update at the end of October brought several improvements – including an easier way to find your console’s serial number and enhancements for DualSense controllers – this new update is relatively minor. It doesn’t include a major new feature like the previous one.
The latest PS5 system software update, version 25.08-12.40.00, is now available worldwide. This update is fairly minor, which is typical for PS5 updates – Sony usually releases bigger changes only a few times a year. This particular update focuses on improving the console’s performance and overall stability, which is the main goal of many of these smaller patches.
Here are the full patch notes for PS5 firmware version 25.08-12.40.00 courtesy of Sony:
- We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens.
- We’ve improved system software performance and stability.

This PS5 update released today is likely the last one we’ll see this year. Sony doesn’t usually announce updates ahead of time, but the company will likely slow down activity soon as many employees take time off for the holidays. We can expect to see more activity from PlayStation in early January, which may lead to another firmware update shortly after.
Good news for anyone hoping to buy a PS5 this holiday season: a new version, the PS5 Slim, is now available! While it’s very similar to previous models, Sony fixed a significant problem with its internal design. Because of this improvement, now is arguably the best time to buy a PS5.
