A recent report about Bethesda and Xbox delivers disappointing news for fans of Indiana Jones. Though Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, released by MachineGames on December 9, 2024, was a well-received game – earning an 87 on Metacritic – it didn’t become a massive hit, even with Xbox Game Pass boosting its numbers. Therefore, fans likely won’t be surprised to learn that MachineGames isn’t planning a sequel and is instead returning to the Wolfenstein series, the franchise they’re most famous for.
A recent report indicates that MachineGames and Bethesda are finally announcing Wolfenstein 3 this year, after a significant delay. Unfortunately, this likely means fans shouldn’t expect a sequel to Indiana Jones and The Great Circle anytime soon. MachineGames typically focuses on one game at a time, and it doesn’t seem a follow-up to Indiana Jones is currently being developed.
Cost of Licensing
Players who enjoyed the 2024 Indiana Jones game might not get a sequel. The Indiana Jones license is costly, and developing a high-budget game like this is expensive too. Combined, these factors make it difficult for Microsoft to approve another installment, particularly with their current focus on Xbox Game Pass, which needs frequent, lower-cost releases. It’s likely that Indiana Jones and The Great Circle will be a standalone game.
Right now, a sequel is just a possibility, not a certainty. If one does happen, it won’t be for several years at the earliest. Current estimates, based on leaked information, suggest it would likely appear on the next generation of consoles – the PS6 and the next Xbox – which are projected to be released around 2028.
