A sequel to Bully likely won’t be made because Rockstar Games is very successful with GTA and Red Dead Redemption. Instead of a new game, a remastered version of the original Bully is more probable. Rockstar hasn’t significantly updated the first game since 2006, aside from the Scholarship Edition in 2008. A mobile Anniversary Edition was released in 2016, but it wasn’t very impressive.
There’s still no news about a potential Bully remake or re-release, but Rockstar Games recently posted a job listing that suggests they might be planning to revisit some of their older titles. The listing is for a Senior Gameplay Programmer, and while that’s not unusual, the description mentions working with ‘classic game technology’ on a small team, hinting at a remaster or re-release project.
Rockstar Games Remasters Coming?
The job description says you’ll join a small, skilled team and likely focus on developing core game technologies.
The meaning of this announcement is unclear, making it hard to say what to expect. While it suggests the developer might be revisiting older games, it doesn’t necessarily mean a remake or re-release of Bully. Although Bully is one of Rockstar Games’ most beloved titles—second only to Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption—they also own other franchises like Midnight Club and Max Payne, as well as earlier games within the GTA and Red Dead series. Still, for fans of Bully and other Rockstar games that haven’t been updated in a while, this news offers a glimmer of hope.
Since Bully was a huge hit on the PS4 – the second best-selling classic PS2 game – it’s likely Rockstar Games will release it again. It’s a simple way for them to make money, keep the game in people’s minds, and maintain ownership of the franchise. However, the game is aging – it’s turning 20 this year – and really needs a significant update, or ‘remaster,’ rather than just a straight re-release.
It’s important to remember that the game Bully is turning 20 this year. This would be an ideal opportunity for Rockstar Games to revisit or celebrate it, and it seems like the timing might be right.
