Several reports this weekend suggest that Santa Monica Studio, the creators of the God of War games, are developing a new role-playing game (RPG) within the God of War universe. While it will be a fresh story and characters, it’s still connected to the world of God of War. We’ve also learned that the next main God of War game is likely several years away and may not be released until the PlayStation 6 console is available.
Information about Santa Monica Studio’s next game is circulating online, with the most substantial details coming from Ashong, a trusted source within the God of War community. On the Reset Era forum, a user suggested the game might be an RPG, and Ashong responded with an eye emoji, hinting at possibility. Meanwhile, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, a highly respected industry insider, clarified a previous statement, saying his comment about it “not being a new IP, but feeling like one” was now clear. This ties into a LinkedIn profile for a senior writer at the studio, which states they’re working on “a new franchise within the God of War universe.”
RPG Set in the Universe of God of War
Many believe this new game is the one Cory Barlog, creative director of the 2018 God of War reboot, has been working on. While rumors have occasionally suggested Freya will be the main character, neither that idea nor Barlog’s involvement has been officially confirmed. However, industry insider Nick Baker recently stated that Barlog is leading the development of this project.
It now appears the next game from the PlayStation team behind God of War will be a role-playing game, or at least have RPG-style features, and will take place in the same universe. Cory Barlog will be leading the project. While there’s talk of Freya being the main character, those rumors are currently unconfirmed and quite vague.
This is disappointing news for fans eager for a sequel to God of War: Ragnarok. It seems this new, unannounced game is at least a year, and possibly even two or more, from release. That means the next main God of War title is likely several years away – potentially a game for the PlayStation 6. This also makes sense of the recent announcements of remakes for the original three God of War games, as well as the surprise release of a spin-off last month.
Just keep in mind that this isn’t official information, so take it with a grain of salt. We’d love to hear your thoughts – feel free to leave a comment or join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
