The team behind the massive Netflix hit Stranger Things was ready to move on to new projects. However, before the final season of Stranger Things came out, Netflix signed a deal to keep their production company working on a few more shows, including the animated spin-off Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 and the horror series Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen. While nothing has matched the incredible success of Stranger Things yet, the sci-fi series The Boroughs seemed like the most promising possibility.
As a big fan of interesting casts, I was really excited about The Boroughs – it had Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard, Geena Davis, and so many other great actors! It was created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, with the Duffer brothers as executive producers, but sadly, Netflix cancelled it after only one season. It’s especially disappointing because it just came out less than a month ago, and Deadline reports that they were already discussing a possible second season! It’s a shame when a show with so much potential gets cut so quickly.
Netflix Cancels The Boroughs After One Season

Netflix was seriously considering continuing The Boroughs, and even discussed renewing it for two seasons back-to-back before the show ever aired. While a team of writers had begun work on Season 2, Netflix has now cancelled the series. It’s currently unknown if they will attempt to find a new home for it elsewhere.
The new Netflix series The Boroughs started slowly, earning 5.6 million views in its first four days starting May 21st. Viewership quickly increased to 9.5 million during its first full week, but then dropped to 3.7 million in the third week and 2 million in the fourth. Over a month, The Boroughs reached just over 20 million views. By comparison, the first four episodes of Bridgerton Season 4 attracted 39.7 million viewers in its opening four days.
Low viewership is always a concern, but The Boroughs faced additional challenges. It was a visually-driven show with significant special effects costs – though likely less expensive than Stranger Things – making it harder to justify the investment. Plus, the show featured a cast of established and recognizable actors, which, while fitting for the story’s setting, also meant higher salary expenses.
The cancellation of The Boroughs is particularly surprising because the show ended on a cliffhanger. While the main storyline was wrapped up, the final scene hinted at future developments. We see Alfred Molina’s character, Sam, looking in a mirror that glitches, suggesting his experiences would have continued and setting up a potential next season. Sadly, that continuation won’t happen.
