Written with Tom Nelson, a former prisoner, the book offers realistic advice for surviving life in prison. In his book, How to Not Die in Prison, Sheridan explains that he’s never actually been incarcerated. Despite this, he was motivated to write the survival guide because he often wondered how he would cope if he were to end up in prison. His interest grew while filming prison scenes for a project, especially after witnessing a former inmate, working as an extra, experience a serious panic attack on set.
Sheridan wrote that two other former prisoners requested to be released right away, not even wanting to participate in a film role that would require them to act like they were still incarcerated. That’s how deeply unsettling the experience of prison can be – some people don’t even want to revisit it, even for a paycheck.
Taylor Sheridan Enters New Territory
Taylor Sheridan is famous for his work on shows like Yellowstone, Tulsa King, and Landman. While he’s a seasoned writer for film and television, How to Not Die in Prison: A Survival Guide marks his debut as an original book author, and he may write more books depending on how this one is received. He also wrote the introduction to the recent 40th anniversary edition of Larry McMurtry’s beloved Western novel, Lonesome Dove, which came out last year.
