Hey there! I’m beyond thrilled that South Park, this brilliant show by creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, is now airing bi-weekly! For almost three decades, they’ve been tirelessly crafting their topical satire, often working under the tight six-day schedule you might remember from the 2011 documentary “6 Days to Air: The Making of South Park.”
But here’s a fun fact – they frequently delivered episodes at the last possible moment! Now, with the resumption of regular episodes post-COVID specials and a condensed 26th season in 2023, we’re skipping every other week for Season 27. Can’t wait to see what fresh hilarity they cook up next!
Following the humorous “Sickofancy” episode focusing on Towelie, which takes him to a military Washington D.C., South Park is taking a brief hiatus until August 27. However, fret not! Season 27 will resume with its fourth episode airing on September 3, and the season will hit its halfway mark with a new fifth episode set to premiere on September 17 at 10 p.m. Eastern/Pacific Time on Comedy Central.
Post-premiere, the 10-episode season will continue to roll out every other Thursday on Paramount+.
In a remarkable turn of events, Season 27 kicked off on July 23 with an episode titled “Sermon on the ‘Mount”. This opening episode garnered the largest season premiere audience share on Comedy Central since 1999, representing a significant 68% rise over the viewership for the season 26 opener, “Cupid Ye”, in 2023. The viral episode drew in approximately 6 million viewers across Paramount+ and Comedy Central, and it became the most socially engaging episode in the show’s 28-year history, with 329 episodes to date.
At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Parker and Stone looked back at how their show’s “first episode” – the short titled “The Spirit of Christmas: Jesus vs. Santa” – gained massive popularity “even before the term ‘going viral’ was coined.
Parker stated that at the time they released their work, there was no concept of a “virus” spreading online. Instead, it was the VHS tape of ‘Spirit of Christmas’ that became widely popular, often referred to as going viral. People were buzzing about this VHS, while Matt and I were struggling in LA, staying on friends’ couches and trying to secure meetings.
Parker went on to explain, “It became widely known and eventually reached us at a casual gathering where people suggested, ‘Check out this video.’ They played it, and our reaction was, ‘That’s us,’ since nobody claimed credit. They said, ‘You’re kidding, we know the guys who made this.’ Turns out there were others boasting about their involvement in it, peddling it, and securing employment with it. Eventually, we proved that it was indeed our work, which led to [South Park].
In 2021, it was announced that South Park had been renewed for a 30th season, with airings scheduled on Comedy Central up until 2027. Starting from 2021, new episodes of South Park Season 27 are broadcast every other Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Comedy Central. The following day, these episodes can be streamed on Paramount+.
