Star Trek is currently at a turning point. After more than ten years, there are no new TV shows being made or planned. The movie series has also been on hold since the release of Star Trek Beyond in 2016. Several efforts were made to create a fourth film in the Kelvin Timeline series, but those plans were ultimately abandoned in favor of starting over with a new reboot. Now that Paramount and Skydance have merged, Star Trek is a key focus for the studio, which is looking to build its movie schedule around well-known franchises. A new Star Trek movie has been announced, but fans aren’t showing much enthusiasm so far.
Paramount announced a new Star Trek movie at CinemaCon, but didn’t offer any specifics about the project. This lack of detail has left fans feeling unimpressed. In a discussion on Reddit, many said they need more than just an announcement ā they want to see real progress like a budget, cast, and script. One user commented they wonāt get excited until thereās something substantial to share, and another said theyāre waiting for a trailer before believing it will actually happen.
One fan pointed out that just mentioning a project is ‘in development’ can sometimes be enough to count as progress. Another wondered how long discussions about the next movie have been going on, estimating it’s been almost ten years.
When Will the Next Star Trek Film Release?

Itās understandable why Star Trek fans are hesitant to get excited about a new movie. Before Star Trek Beyond came out, a fourth film featuring Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk was being discussed. However, after that movie didnāt perform as well as hoped at the box officeāearning $343.4 million worldwide, the lowest of the three Kelvin timeline filmsāParamount put the project on hold. Since then, weāve heard about various other potential Star Trek movies from different directors and writers, like Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley, but none of them have actually been made. Fans are now understandably weary of hearing about films that are supposedly āin developmentā and are eager to see a finished product.
Given the limited mention of Star Trek during Paramountās recent presentation, the next movie is likely still very early in the planning stages. Directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley were announced for a new Star Trek film back in November 2025, but there haven’t been many updates since. It’s probable they’re still working on the story and haven’t completed the script yet. With their new film, Mayday, scheduled for release in September, Goldstein and Daley might be focusing on that project for now and will begin work on Star Trek afterward. Mayday was filmed in 2024.
Considering everything, the next Star Trek movie likely won’t be released until 2028, and even that depends on production starting in 2027. Paramount considers Star Trek a priority, but they want to ensure the next film is excellent, as it’s meant to launch a new direction for the franchise. They’re aiming to better connect the films with the existing Star Trek TV shows and have ambitious plans, but a disappointing movie could derail those efforts.
Fans are eager to see real progress on the new Star Trek movie from directors Goldstein and Daley. They seem ideally suited to bring the franchise back to life, having proven with films like Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons that they can breathe new life into familiar stories with clever visuals and engaging characters. A Star Trek film under their direction could be exactly what the series needs ā a way to both respect its history and offer a modern take. It would be great to see their creative vision applied to the Star Trek universe.
