The future of Star Trek is uncertain following the cancellation of Starfleet Academy and a lack of clear direction from Paramount regarding the next phase of the franchise. Recent discussions have largely focused on the mixed reactions to Starfleet Academy, as well as updates – and lack thereof – on potential spin-offs and projects. Overall, the direction of Star Trek on television is unclear, but thankfully, fans still have other Star Trek media to enjoy.
Fans of Star Trek have a lot to look forward to this year! There are several exciting releases planned, including a continuation of the Red Shirts comic, a new Star Trek: Picard novel called To Defy Fate, and various reference books. Plus, the next season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds arrives July 23rd, and we’ve finally seen a trailer! Perhaps the most ambitious project is Star Trek Timelines, a book coming out in November from DK to commemorate the franchise’s 60th anniversary. This book aims to create a definitive timeline of events, even including alternate realities like the Mirror Universe and the Kelvin timeline, and the challenges faced in Star Trek: Voyager. Hopefully, it will also provide clarity on the often-confusing events of Khan’s Eugenics Wars, something many fans have been waiting for.
Star Trek’s Eugenics War is One Of the Biggest Timeline Questions

Maintaining a consistent timeline is always challenging for a franchise that’s lasted 60 years, and science fiction often has particularly complex histories. Luckily, Star Trek hasn’t had major timeline problems, though some details have been changed or reinterpreted over time. For example, Spock says in the original series that he’s never tried a mind meld with a human, but the newer Strange New Worlds series shows him doing it twice before that original episode aired. Hopefully, an upcoming book detailing the timelines will address these kinds of smaller inconsistencies that fans have noticed.
A tricky issue the show faces is figuring out when the Eugenics Wars took place. Initially, they were said to have happened from 1993 to 1996, but later episodes of The Next Generation, Voyager, and DS9 set stories in the 90s without mentioning this major war. The show Strange New Worlds addressed this in its Season 2 episode “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow,” explaining that temporal conflicts occurred around Khan and the Eugenics War, causing time to essentially reset itself and rearrange events. This conveniently explains why the timeline doesn’t quite add up – time fixed things on its own.
One ongoing issue the new book could address involves the complicated timeline of Khan Noonien Singh. Picard Season 2 revealed that Dr. Adam Soong began his research related to Khan in 2024, which doesn’t quite fit with the timeline presented in Strange New Worlds, where Khan is shown as a child a year earlier. Ideally, the book will establish a definitive history of the Eugenics Wars and Khan’s life. However, it remains to be seen if it will do that, or if it will continue to rely on the flexible timelines seen in Strange New Worlds. Using that approach could create inconsistencies unless it’s clarified that only specific events are affected by time travel and timeline changes. Still, it will be interesting to see how the book handles this.
