For over ten years, American Horror Story has become known for its scary stories and its impressive collection of actors. While stars like Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson are frequently highlighted, the show’s unique format has also given many other famous faces the chance to appear in unforgettable, though sometimes short-lived, roles.
Since each season of American Horror Story tells a completely new story, even well-known actors can easily be overlooked, particularly if they only appear in one episode or a small part of the plot. Over the years, the show has featured a surprising number of guest stars – including Academy Award nominees, stars from popular comedies, and horror legends – that many viewers have completely forgotten were ever on the show.
Even though some actors had short roles, were hidden by makeup, or weren’t central to the main storylines, their performances still enrich the show’s history. Looking back, it’s obvious that American Horror Story has consistently attracted talented actors, even in smaller parts that viewers might not notice.
Naomi Campbell
Okay, so everyone knows Naomi Campbell as this incredible supermodel, a total legend in fashion. But honestly, her acting roles are few and far between, which is why I was so surprised to see her pop up in American Horror Story: Hotel! She plays Claudia Bankson, a Vogue editor who ends up at the Hotel Cortez – and it’s all thanks to an invite from Will Drake. It was a really interesting casting choice, and she definitely made an impression.
Claudia was initially delighted with her new accommodation, but things quickly turned dangerous when she was attacked by Gabriel, a demon who had taken refuge inside her mattress. Even after her violent death, Claudia remained as a ghost, continuing to offer sharp and critical opinions on fashion.
Ian McShane
Ian McShane is famous for his strong performances in shows like Deadwood and the John Wick movies, but many viewers find his role in American Horror Story: Asylum especially unsettling. He plays Leigh Emerson, a cruel and dangerous killer locked up in Briarcliff Manor, and perfectly captures the show’s intensely dark atmosphere.
After a short release by the demonically possessed Sister Mary Eunice, Leigh transforms into Santa Claus and then commits shocking crimes. His story quickly becomes one of manipulation, violence, and sacrilege, showcasing actor McShane’s talent for playing truly disturbing characters.
Heather Langenkamp
As a horror fan, I instantly recognized Heather Langenkamp when she popped up in American Horror Story: Freak Show! It was a really cool, self-aware moment, considering she’s so iconic as Nancy Thompson from A Nightmare on Elm Street. She had a quick, uncredited role in the ‘Tupperware Party Massacre’ episode, playing one of the ladies enjoying Jimmy Darling’s show.
Langenkamp’s brief appearance is a clever tribute to classic horror films. It’s a quick cameo designed for dedicated fans who recognize the iconic figures of the genre.
Mike Colter
Before he became known as the Marvel hero Luke Cage, Mike Colter played David on American Horror Story: Coven. David was part of the mysterious Delphi Trust, a group dedicated to hunting witches. He was involved in difficult talks between Fiona Goode and Marie Laveau, hoping to resolve their decades-long conflict.
His time on the show is tragically cut short when the Axeman kills him, acting on Fiona’s command. Even though his part is small, it highlights the ongoing battle for control between different supernatural groups this season.
Eric Stonestreet
While most people recognize Eric Stonestreet from his popular role on Modern Family, he gives a surprisingly unsettling performance in American Horror Story: Murder House. He portrays Derek, a patient of Ben Harmon, who is deeply frightened by local urban legends, especially a scary figure known as “Piggy Man.”
Derek’s intense paranoia appears unfounded, but tragically, events soon prove his fears weren’t so far-fetched when he’s killed in a home invasion. The performance is a surprising turn for Stonestreet, skillfully mixing psychological tension with the very real threat of violence, offering a more complex and unsettling role than fans are used to seeing from him.
Lena Dunham
Lena Dunham, known for creating and starring in the show Girls, played a very different role in American Horror Story: Cult. She portrayed Valerie Solanas, a real-life feminist who became notorious for trying to kill Andy Warhol.
The show portrays Solanas as the leader of a hidden group of women called SCUM. Lena Dunham fully embraces the character’s erratic and angry nature, giving a striking and controversial performance that’s particularly memorable in a season already filled with intense themes and political distrust.
Mitch Pileggi
Mitch Pileggi is famous for his role as Walter Skinner on The X-Files, but he also appeared in American Horror Story: 1984. He played Art Sawyer, a staff member at Red Meadows Asylum, whose story is closely linked to the escape of the character Mr. Jingles, also known as Benjamin Richter.
Art calmly makes sense of the trouble caused by the escape, but glimpses into the past suggest he’s more troubled than he lets on, especially when he’s around Donna. He provides a stable presence in a season otherwise filled with intense, scary events.
Darren Criss
I always get a kick out of spotting familiar faces in American Horror Story, and Darren Criss’s cameo in Hotel is a fun one. He’s fantastic, of course – you probably know him from Glee or his Emmy-winning work on The Assassination of Gianni Versace. Here, he plays Justin, a really cool, Silver Lake type, and he and his girlfriend just want to spend a peaceful Halloween at the Hotel Cortez… which, let’s be honest, never happens in that place!
Their relaxing getaway quickly turns terrifying because of Kathy Bates’ character, Iris. When Justin repeatedly pushes boundaries and makes excessive requests, he experiences one of the hotel’s shockingly harsh punishments, demonstrating that no one escapes unharmed.
Trixie Mattel
Trixie Mattel, famous for RuPaul’s Drag Race and her music, has a surprising connection to American Horror Story. She interviewed the cast of American Horror Story: Roanoke – including Sidney Aaron James – at a mock PaleyFest event. During the interview, they hinted at a possible continuation of the story, which actually served as a setup for the second part of that season.
Max Greenfield
I was so surprised to see Max Greenfield, who I loved in New Girl, take on such a different role in American Horror Story: Hotel! He plays Gabriel, a really damaged guy struggling with addiction, and his story gets seriously creepy when he meets one of the show’s scariest villains – this terrifying demon that embodies addiction itself. It’s a far cry from Nick Miller, but he’s fantastic!
Ryan Murphy said the scenes featuring Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters in ‘American Horror Story’ were some of the most unsettling the show has ever done. This was a particularly shocking role for Peters, a stark contrast to his typical on-screen image, and it’s a performance that often stays with viewers long after they’ve seen it.
