The Western action movie, Gunslingers, quietly premiered last year and has been available on Netflix since then. However, it will be removed from the streaming service at the end of the month, so there’s limited time left to watch it.
The movie Gunslingers will no longer be available on Netflix after May 1st. While critics didn’t love it, Nicolas Cage fans might still want to watch it, as he doesn’t often appear in Westerns. He’s known for working in many different kinds of films, but this is one of his few ventures into the Old West. Gunslingers had a small release in theaters and for video-on-demand viewing in April 2025 and didn’t get much attention at the time.
Nicolas Cage Plays a Bounty Hunter in Gunslingers
Brian Skiba wrote and directed the Western film Gunslingers. The story centers on Thomas Keller, played by Stephen Dorff, a notorious outlaw hiding in the small town of Redemption after a past crime. He’s trying to start over under a new identity, but his peaceful life is disrupted when a wounded woman named Val, played by Heather Graham, seeks him out. Meanwhile, a bounty hunter, Ben (Cage), learns that Keller is still alive and heads to Redemption as well.
The film received almost universally negative reviews, earning a dismal 5% score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the lowest-rated movies ever. While viewers rated it slightly higher at 18%, it was still overwhelmingly disliked. One review from Common Sense Media called it one of the worst Westerns ever made. Despite the film’s flaws, Nicolas Cage’s performance was acknowledged as a bright spot, with one critic noting it was his typical, uniquely eccentric performance.
Nicolas Cage Was Nominated for a Razzie
As much as I love Nicolas Cage, even he has a few films that didn’t quite hit the mark! Gunslingers actually got him a Razzie nomination for Worst Supporting Actor – thankfully, he didn’t win, but his co-star Scarlet Rose Stallone did take home that ‘honor’ for Worst Supporting Actress. He’s been nominated for a lot of Razzies over the years – he even won Worst Actor for the Ghost Rider movies – but it’s been amazing to see him get so much praise recently for films like Mandy and others. It just goes to show how versatile and talented he is!
Despite limited time and a modest budget, we aimed to deliver the best possible film,” director Brian Skiba recently shared with UPI about the movie, which was filmed over 18 days during the 2024 tornado season. He praised actor Nick as being respectful, kind, and a pleasure to work with, noting his dedication on set. “Unlike some actors who retreat to their trailers, Nick remained in character and ready to film near the set, which was really refreshing and enjoyable.”
Gunslingers is streaming on Netflix until May 1, 2026.
