Nickelodeon’s rise to becoming a major cable network was largely thanks to its original animated series, known as NickToons. Starting with shows like Rugrats, Doug, and Ren & Stimpy, these cartoons have remained a staple of the channel, with SpongeBob SquarePants still popular today. Recently, a key animator behind a well-loved NickToon surprised fans by announcing he’s in discussions with Paramount to bring back his character, and is also working on a revival of several other classic NickToons.
At MomoCon, an anime convention in Atlanta, creator Jorge R. Gutierrez shared exciting news: he’s working to bring back his show, El Tigre, at Paramount. Even more surprisingly, he’s hoping to include characters from Invader Zim and My Life as a Teenage Robot in a crossover! While these Nickelodeon shows are quite different from El Tigre, Gutierrez has already spoken with the creators of both, Jhonen Vasquez and Rob Renzetti, and they’ve given him their approval. Although Paramount hasn’t officially approved the project yet, things are looking promising.
El Tigre’s Return

If you haven’t seen El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, it’s a Nickelodeon cartoon about a boy who learns his dad is a superhero and his grandpa is a supervillain. As animator Jorge Gutierrez explained at Momocon, the show centers around Manny’s internal conflict – he constantly wavers between good and evil, unable to fully commit to either his father’s heroic path or his grandfather’s villainous one. Gutierrez worked extensively at Nickelodeon, but now has several new animation projects planned with other studios.
The animator recently shared that he’s actively trying to bring back a classic NickToons show at Paramount. He also has a lot of other projects in the works, including a new animated movie for Netflix, two series for Disney, and he’s still developing a Speedy Gonzales film for Warner Bros. Warner Bros. is really leaning into its Looney Tunes characters again – Tubi has seen a big boost from streaming the Looney Tunes library, and the movie Coyote vs. Acme, which was almost cancelled, is now scheduled for release this summer. Even if the revival of El Tigre doesn’t happen, the animator is clearly very busy with all these different projects.
