Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man Series Just Destroyed Sony’s Spider-Verse Trend

If you haven’t seen Prime’s Spider-Noir, you’re really missing out on a fantastic superhero series – it’s arguably the best live-action Spider-Man show ever made, and a surprisingly great addition to the entire Spider-Man universe. We originally gave it 4 stars in our review, but it’s so good and rewatchable (especially with two versions to choose from) that I’m considering bumping that up to 4.5. It truly is exceptional.

Nicolas Cage’s wildly unique portrayal of Spider-Man – known here simply as The Spider – offers a thrilling and unpredictable contrast to the more wholesome version played by Tom Holland. It features more intense action and even some surprisingly creepy body horror. Importantly, it demonstrates that Sony was right to try creating a more mature corner of the Spider-Man universe. It also proves that Sony’s Spider-Verse projects can successfully feature different versions of Spider-Man, not just villains or side characters. After a string of disappointments, Spider-Noir feels like exactly what the franchise needed, and it reverses their recent losing streak in a big way.

How Spider-Noir Ended the Live-Action Spider-Verse Streak

While critics weren’t overly enthusiastic about Sony’s Spider-Verse films – and opinions may change over time – audiences generally enjoyed them much more. Audience scores offer a more comprehensive view of the movies’ quality, with a larger number of responses. However, critics’ scores are what are officially recorded, creating an overall impression that the franchise never received a truly positive review, and even earned three shockingly low scores below 20%.

Movie Release Year Rotten Tomatoes Critic Score RT Audience Score
Venom 2018 31%
Venom: Let There Be Carnage 2021 58%
Morbius 2022 15%
Madame Web 2024 10%
Venom: The Last Dance 2024 40%
Kraven the Hunter 2024 15%

Unlike other Spider-Verse movies from Sony, Spider-Noir has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a 91% score from critics and the “Certified Fresh” designation from Rotten Tomatoes. This is a significant 33% higher than any of Sony’s live-action Spider-Verse films. What’s even more notable is that Spider-Noir breaks the typical pattern of differing critic and audience opinions seen since the release of Venom in 2018. With a 92% audience score, it nearly matches the critical score, suggesting Sony is likely even more pleased with how well the show has connected with fans. This positive reception hopefully means we’ll see a second season, potentially continuing the story with a new set of villains after the events of the first season’s ending.
