Director Osgood Perkins, known for films like The Monkey and Longlegs, has cast Nicole Kidman in his latest movie, The Young People. This marks a departure for the Oscar-winning actress, as it’s her first horror film in 24 years. The Young People is Perkins’ fourth collaboration with Neon.
Previously, The Young People had already cast Tatiana Maslany, known for Orphan Black, and Nico Parker from How to Train Your Dragon. Now, Nicole Kidman is joining the project, marking her return to the horror genre for the first time since the 2001 film The Others, directed by Alejandro Amenábar. Details about the plot of The Young People haven’t been revealed yet.
Nicole Kidman is joining a cast that already includes Tatiana Maslany, Sarah Parker, Lola Tung (known from The Summer I Turned Pretty), Brendan Hines (The Tick), Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife), Heather Graham (Drugstore Cowboy), Johnny Knoxville (Jackass), Lexi Minetree (Elle), and Lily Collias (Good One). Kidman hasn’t appeared in a horror film since 2001’s The Others, where she played Grace, a mother who moves with her two children, Anne and Nicholas, to a new house in New Jersey after World War II. In the film, Grace is unaware of what happened to her missing husband and tries to shield her children from sunlight due to their extreme sensitivity. Anne believes the house is haunted, and Grace becomes suspicious of the staff. As the story unfolds, Grace discovers there’s much more to her household and her own life than she initially understood.
Neon will release the new film, The Young People, in U.S. theaters and also handle international sales. Lyrical Media is co-financing the project. Director Perkins is producing alongside his partner Chris Ferguson through their production company, Phobos, with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones of Range also producing. This film is the first under a deal Neon made with Perkins and Phobos in 2025. Neon had a successful 2024 with Longlegs, which earned $75 million domestically and became the highest-grossing independent film of the year. They also saw strong numbers with The Monkey, which gave them one of their biggest opening weekends ever. Neon will also release Perkins’ next film, Keeper, on November 14th.
