Nicole Richie Details Friendship With Joel Madden’s Ex Hilary Duff

Nicole Richie and Hilary Duff’s friendship is what dreams are made of.

Nicole Richie wrote a heartfelt message about Hilary Duff, reminiscing about their long-time friendship. It’s worth noting that Hilary previously dated Nicole’s husband, Joel Madden, from 2004 to 2006.

I’ve been lucky enough to call Hilary Duff a friend for around seven years now. But honestly, for so many of us millennials, she feels like someone we’ve known and grown up with our whole lives. It’s amazing to see Time recognize her as one of the 100 Most Influential People of 2026 – it totally makes sense to me!

The 44-year-old woman felt connected to Hilary, and like they were sharing the experience together. She and many fans felt a huge boost of happiness when Hilary’s album, Luck… or Something, came out in February.

Nicole described Hilary as someone who embodies both fond memories of the past and a vibrant present. Hilary evokes a sense of simpler, hopeful times, but she’s also confidently embraced adulthood, creating a fulfilling life with family, a successful career, and a genuine sense of self.

Nicole enthusiastically praised Hilary, describing her as someone they all admired growing up and now enjoy as a sophisticated and confident woman. She noted Hilary is authentic, radiant, and comfortable being herself.

I’m constantly amazed by Hilary Duff! Not only is she building this incredible career and having a huge moment in music right now, but she’s also raising four kids – Luca, who’s 13 and she co-parents with Mike Comrie, and her three younger daughters, Banks, May, and little Townes. Honestly, how she manages it all – the career, the kids, and still finds time to hang out with her friends for a glass (or seven!) of wine – is just inspiring to me.

Nicole playfully referenced Hilary Duff, saying she was ‘letting the rain fall down and my hair down,’ and embracing a sense of growth and maturity in the process.

Hilary enjoys her relaxed friendship with Nicole, who is a mother to teenagers Harlow, 18, and Sparrow, 16, with her husband, Joel.

Hilary shared on Watch What Happens Live in 2023 that she and her friend see each other very often, recently mentioning she was just at her friend’s house, playfully honking for her to join a wine night.

Nicole has always loved her sister-in-law’s films, and a few years ago, she got the chance to ask her to recreate some iconic moments, even filming a scene from My Best Friend’s Wedding.

During a May 2024 appearance on the Everything Iconic with Danny Pellegrino podcast, she recounted telling Cameron, ‘I need you to run towards me from behind the luggage cart, towards the airport.’ She explained that she started directing Cameron, telling her exactly what to say while they were driving, and Cameron happily complied. She described Cameron’s willingness to follow her instructions as incredibly generous.

Thankfully, Lawrence was available to spend time with us, otherwise we might have missed out on seeing one of our favorite friendships blossom! Their connection started when the Oscar-winning actress emailed Schumer after watching her 2015 movie, Trainwreck. “I told her, ‘I don’t even know where to begin. I guess I should just say it: I’m in love with you,'” Lawrence remembered telling The New York Times. From there, they started emailing and quickly moved to texting.

What really brought them closer, though, was Schumer inviting Lawrence to join her and her high school friends for a trip to the Hamptons. Schumer was surprised when Lawrence accepted, but quickly realized she was “the coolest person you’ll ever meet,” she shared on The Daily Show. “She’s just so easy to hang out with, and she fit right in with the group.”

Everyone would love a friend who’s successful and established in their community! Jennifer Lopez and Leah Remini have been incredibly close ever since they met and instantly connected at the premiere of Man on Fire in 2004. Lopez described it as an immediate, effortless chemistry – she just loved being around Remini and felt instantly at ease.

Remini was also enthusiastically cheering on Lopez when she performed at President Joe Biden’s inauguration. She messaged Lopez, telling her that as a fellow Bronx native, the performance was truly inspiring and beautiful to watch.

Oh my gosh, can we talk about Jennifer, Courteney, and Lisa? Seriously, they’re the ultimate friend group! I’ve been following them forever, and it’s amazing how close they still are. It all started way back on the Warner Brothers lot – they were always grabbing lunch together! Someone told me they basically grew up together, and going through Friends together was this huge, life-changing thing for them. It’s like when you stay connected with people from your first job, you know? They make time for each other – happy hours, big reunions, everything! And it’s so easy because they all live relatively close. Apparently, Sunday dinners at Courteney’s are a regular thing, and Jen loves having them over for pool parties. They just feel incredibly connected, and honestly, I think they always will be. It’s just…goals, you know?

As someone who’s always been fascinated by strong connections, I’ve always admired the bond between Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They met way back in 1993 during an improv class, and honestly, their friendship is the stuff of legends! They’re so close, they genuinely feel like family—Tina has a younger brother, Greg, but she’s described herself and Amy as ‘chosen sisters.’ She even told PopSugar while promoting their movie Sisters that their connection has given her a family dynamic she hadn’t experienced before, and it’s been wonderful to witness.

Philipps described meeting Williams on the set of Dawson’s Creek as love at first sight. They quickly became friends and shared a natural connection, bonding over things like drinking wine, smoking, and even getting into trouble. That initial spark of affection has lasted for years. Luckily for fans, we get a glimpse into their life together – from walking red carpets and coordinating outfits to occasionally giving Williams a playful millennial pink hair makeover.

Drake and Adele, despite only recently considering a partnership, seem eager to work together. After years of admiring each other’s music – they’ve collectively won 19 Grammy Awards – they started talking about a possible collaboration. Adele mentioned to etalk that she’d love to create an official remix with Drake, saying she’s a huge fan – she even bought the red coat from his music video! Drake responded with equal enthusiasm, jokingly offering to do Adele’s laundry. Instead of housework, they’ve been enjoying casual outings, like grabbing dinner and going bowling. It seems a collaboration is definitely in the works – maybe they’ll let us know when it’s ready via a phone call!

After receiving wonderful support from other women during her pregnancies, Eva Washington is committed to offering the same encouragement to her celebrity friends. She shared with Entertainment Tonight that she makes a point of having open and honest conversations, especially with Eva Longoria. Longoria greatly appreciated Washington’s advice when she welcomed her son, Santiago, in 2018, playfully referring to Washington as “basically my doula.”

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who famously won an Oscar for Good Will Hunting over 20 years ago, have teamed up again for the film The Last Duel. Despite not working together on screen for a while, their close friendship remains strong. Damon explained to Entertainment Tonight that they’ve known each other for 35 years and grew up together, sharing a passion for acting and filmmaking. He believes this shared obsession during their younger years created a lifelong bond.

The friendship between two prominent television personalities began in 1976 while they worked at a Baltimore station. Although Oprah Winfrey was an anchor and Gayle King a production assistant, and they didn’t typically mix socially due to the workplace structure, a snowstorm brought them closer. Oprah invited Gayle, who earned $12,000 a year as a PA, to stay with her. The next day, they went shopping together at the mall, and a lasting friendship blossomed over sweaters at Casual Corner.

While your dates probably don’t involve Wimbledon finals or palace visits, Meghan Markle and the tennis star’s connection started like many others—with casual conversation. Meghan wrote on her former website, The Tig, that they “clicked right away” when they met at a 2014 Super Bowl event. They spent time taking pictures, laughing during a flag football game, and chatting about everyday things – not tennis or acting, but typical “girly stuff.”

Even though Game of Thrones is over, the close bond between Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams remains strong. Williams, who was a bridesmaid at Turner’s wedding to Joe Jonas in 2019, believes the most valuable outcome of the show’s eight seasons wasn’t its 12 Emmy Awards. She playfully told TopMob News at the final season premiere that the show felt like a long journey to find her best friend. “It’s been incredible,” she added, “having a friend like Sophie during something as crazy as Game of Thrones has been a true blessing.”

Everyone’s heart probably melted watching Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively’s adorable reaction when their oldest daughter, James, recognized Taylor Swift’s song “Gorgeous” at a concert. Lively later jokingly called the video embarrassing, telling Robin Roberts on Good Morning America that it showed their “unfiltered pride” as stage parents. But the genuine friendship between the families – which includes celebrating the Fourth of July at Taylor Swift’s Rhode Island home, gatherings at Reynolds and Lively’s country house, and appearances in Swift’s music videos – is special and worth cherishing.

Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon have a friendship that goes way back, even before their Apple TV+ series, The Morning Show. They first worked together in 2000 when Witherspoon had a small role on the NBC hit show Aniston was starring in. Witherspoon, who had just had a baby, Ava Phillippe, remembers being surprised when Aniston noticed her pumping breast milk on set. Witherspoon felt a little awkward, but Aniston was incredibly kind. As Witherspoon recalls, that’s when their friendship began, and they’ve been close ever since.

Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg have an unlikely but captivating friendship that blossomed at Justin Bieber’s Comedy Central Roast in 2015. It continued with their VH1 cooking show, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party. Snoop Dogg explained to LA Weekly that Martha is different from people he’s usually around, but surprisingly relatable. He appreciates that she’s genuine and down-to-earth, despite coming from a different generation. He described their connection as feeling like a true partnership, joking it’s ‘holy matrimony, not holy macaroni,’ highlighting their comfortable and natural chemistry.
