Nicole Richie is coming clean about how she feels about her friend’s music. 

Following the release of Hilary Duff’s new song “Mature,” which many believe is about her ex-boyfriend Joel Madden, a former star of The Simple Life offered words of support.

Nicole and Hilary posted a fun photo to Instagram on November 11th of themselves lying in the grass, holding hands, and laughing. Nicole captioned the picture, tagging Hilary, and jokingly said that while they might not be mature, Hilary’s song is fantastic.

Before Nicole shared her heartfelt response, people speculated that the song “Mature” was based on Hilary’s previous relationship with Joel, who was nine years older than her.

In the song’s chorus, Hilary reflects on a past relationship, singing, ‘She looks like she could be your daughter / Like me before I got smarter.’ She also recalls being complimented with lines like, ‘When I was flattered to hear you say / You’re so mature for your age,’ hinting at a significant age gap with her former partner, who was 28 when they broke up and she was 19.

One X user commented on November 10th about Hilary Duff’s new song, jokingly asking if the lyrics about maturity were a reference to her husband, Joel Madden.

Another added, “New Hilary Duff being a Joel Madden diss track is WILD.”

Hilary hasn’t publicly addressed the rumors, but she did previously explain the true story behind the song.
