After Hellraiser…..
Stephen King famously predicted Clive Barker would become a major force in horror. This made sense, as Barker, after being unhappy with his early film Rawhead Rex, took complete creative control of Hellraiser, his first directorial effort. Hellraiser shocked viewers with its intense gore and introduced the unforgettable Cenobites, led by the character Pinhead. Following this success, Barker directed Nightbreed, which was adapted from his novel Cabal.
Nightbreed arrives….
Nightbreed is a dark fantasy film centered around Midian, a hidden world populated by monsters. Aaron Boone, played by Craig Sheffer, is haunted by dreams of this place – a refuge for creatures escaping humanity. While attending therapy sessions urged by his girlfriend Lore (Anne Bobby), Aaron unknowingly becomes a suspect in a string of murders orchestrated by his manipulative therapist, Dr. Decker (David Cronenberg). Believing he’s no longer accepted by humans, Aaron seeks out Midian, unaware that the true killer has sinister plans for him and the unique inhabitants of this monster haven.
The creatures
The effects team loved working on Nightbreed, enjoying complete creative freedom to design incredibly imaginative monsters directly inspired by Clive Barker’s sketches. He was a prolific artist, constantly generating new creature designs, and the team brought these to life in a way audiences hadn’t seen before. The film uniquely focused on the monsters as sympathetic characters, portraying humans as the true villains. Beyond Barker’s fantastic creatures, the film also marked the acting debut of renowned horror director David Cronenberg. While he’d made brief appearances in his own films and a cameo in John Landis’s ‘Into the Night,’ Cronenberg took on the role to experience being on the other side of a horror film, and he delivered a strong performance.
The cut and uncut version….
The film was released in the US in February 1990, but unfortunately didn’t connect with audiences. This wasn’t a surprise to director Clive Barker, who was disappointed the studio had trimmed his 120-minute cut down to 102 minutes. The film was also hampered by a poor marketing campaign that didn’t reflect its true nature. Worldwide, Nightbreed only earned around $8 million, failing to recoup its production costs – a stark contrast to Hellraiser, which had earned $14 million with a much smaller budget. However, fans knew about a longer, restored version called the ‘Cabal cut’, which was shown at many film festivals over the years. Now, that version is finally available on Blu-ray with a wealth of bonus content.

The most impressive extra is a lengthy documentary about the making of the film, with interviews from many of the crew and cast, although the director, Clive Barker, is notably absent. The package also includes the original screenplay and a 40-page booklet with essays by Barker and other contributors.
Clive Barker is a true creative talent, starting his career with theater before becoming famous for his horror novels and movies. For fans of his film Nightbreed, this 2-disc 4K UHD release is essential, as it’s one of only three films he ever directed.
